The few times I've heard "Playing in the Band" I've mostly dismissed it, but I really love the frenetic energy here. It's just super fast - not what I expect right here to start off the set. I guess I see why they do it, but again, maybe it's the fidelity of these recordings or something but this performance totally sold me. "Truckin'" is one of my favorite studio tracks and this version doesn't do that much for me. I mean I enjoy it, it's fun - but it doesn't really go to the top for me. "Drums" being short and sweet is awesome, definitely wished they did that more often and it segues perfectly into "The Other One" which I still think goes on a bit too long. Some incredibly interesting moments, obviously, but some that just meander. And I like meandering! "El Paso" seems like the band sort of getting their breath back to be honest. One of my favorite classic country tracks, and while the playing is tight, it doesn't seem to have that OOMPH - but it could totally be because the second "The Other One" rips pretty hard. I think the quiet moments on this part work better than the first time, and everytime the instruments start to pick up again, I get pretty jazzed. I just opened up my windows and turned up the volume - that's the reaction I'm supposed to have. I really like when the drums pick up and everything builds for the last 2 minutes of the track and then the way that you think it's going to explode into "Wharf Rat" but basically just smoothly transitions. Love that.

"Wharf Rat" for it's own purposes is a great close to the set. I love the more serene songs to close out the set, really gives that sense of a band knowing what they're doing - and "coming down".

Phew, that set is a workout.

Listened to everything through "Truckin'" today from the 4-08 show. A couple of thoughts...

-Jerry puts on a pickin' clinic in "Me and My Uncle" that starts in Appalachia, makes detours through Nashville and Bakersfield and then meanders North to the Golden Gate. Holy fuck, it's amazing.

-They are definitely not as "on" this night and are beset by some technical problems, broken strings, etc.

-"Cumberland Blues" was, at one point nearly 20 years ago, my favorite Dead song. I was fully ready to cringe here when the singing started, but they actually pulled it off.

-I was excited when I realized that Jerry was playing pedal steel for "Feels Like Rain", but man, what a fucking mess. File under "not fully realized"

-I liked "Bertha" here but it was weird how much I missed Jerry's little fill in the chorus (that one he always does).

-I can't take another "Good Lovin'"

I downloaded on a different computer than the one I uploaded on and was able to download and uncompress the file (using SimplyUnRAR).

I'll reup though if other people are having problems.

unfortunately it immediately brought back to mind the coke-fueled uber-nerd ramblings of mid-90's trey going off on col forbin, icculus, poster nutbag, the helping friendly book or any number of gamehendge oddities. ***vomit***

Heard a quick random selection, but not close to all the way through. I like that Bertha, Big Railroad Blues, Looks Like Rain, so far.

... Seriously? I just logged in to say how much I liked it, though I was startled at first. "Looks Like Rain" kind of sounded like a Neil Young song with Ben Keith on the steel.

This is definitely one of my favourite Bobby songs, and this is a smooth, languid version, an approach that I'd yet to hear. LLR is chameleon-like in the differing ways it's performed. I'm curious to see if all versions on this tour are like so.

i'm with you jsh, i thought it was a highlight. i don't recall ever hearing a jerry-slide version before. but also like you, this is one of my favorite tunes, so i think i also really appreciated how different it was from what i'm used to.

this "One More Saturday Night" is the version from the original Europe '72 double disc set, right?

EDIT: nope, but it Cumberland Blues from the original is from 4/8/72


Are we moving on to night 3 now?
