A fictional tribute album to Buddy Holly. No bands, only solo artists and solo artists that masquerade as bands. Who would you try and track down for the album and what song would you hope they tackle?

My thoughts so far include:

Badly Drawn Boy
Iron & Wine
Daniel Johnston
Dashboard Confessional
Bright Eyes
Stephin Merritt

alongdrive, those are all for the most part sad singer songwriter type, and buddy holly didn't have many sad tunes

so i'd say

Stephin Merritt - True Love Ways
Daniel Johnston - It's So Easy
Kristin Hersh - That'll Be The Day
Elvis Costello - Peggy Sue
Matthew Sweet - Think It Over
Calvin Johnson - Maybe Baby
Robert Schnieder (masquerading as his solo side project Marbles) - Everyday

wow, i wish this would really happen

Ray Davies - Well Allright
John Fogerty - Rave On (or maybe that would be even better served by Roky Erickson?)
