I've read them both and enjoyed them both for different reasons. Kite Runner was better in my opinion. Curious Incident bored me in it's simplicity. But it was a quick easy read if that's what you're after.

If you want to read a really fabulous book along the same lines as The Kite Runner, but a million times better and takes place in India instead of Afghanistan, read A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry. Hands down one of the best books that I've ever read. Don't let the fact that it's an Oprah book turn you off (that's usually a deal-killer for me). I read it years before Oprah got her hands on it, and it's on my summer reading list for a re-read.

Really enjoyed it. You might need to be a bit more advanced than a typical teenager to "get something out of it," but I think you'll be fine. Very powerful writing, actually - Haddon really pulls off putting on the persona of a mentally challenged individual and never lets it slip. I thought that was particularly amazing. It's not a "'hip' modern book" - it's just a particularly well-written, unusual book that gets written off by people who like to look like they're above being affected by things that get noticed by the general public.

A yuppie coworker suggested The Kite Runner, so I haven't read it.

Curious is great. I let my best friend borrow my copy last weekend.

Kite Runner was given to me, and it keeps coming up in convos. I'm wondering if it is one of those book clubby type of books which catches fire, but stylistically and content-wise isn't really that great.

This thread gave me the heeby-jeebies after I realized I had misremembered Verbal Intercourse as CatsWillEatYou's edgelord medical student homie. Because that guy was just about the only tolerable Obner. & VI is, frankly, not that.

Then, I corrected, & recognized Verbal Intercourse as Cemetery Polka's Yung Kavanaugh type boyfriend who really just wanted to go boof & forth forever with KingOfCarrotFlowers.

Anyway, now, I'm missing KOCF, & the powerboarders who are no longer with us -- chowgurt, beachy lunchtime musings, red, elephantstone... I just hope they're someone in heaven, surrounded by the pretty angels, & DunwoodyDude.

I've been on a big music biography kick of late, most of which have been autobiographies. Currently reading "Time is Tight" by Booker T. Just finished Jimmy Webb's "The Cake and The Rain." Before that, it was "Life" by Keith Richards, "Thanks a Lot, Mr. Kibblewhite" by Roger Daltrey, and "Closer You Are: The Story of Robert Pollard and Guided by Voices" by Matthew Cutter. Probably gonna grab/read the Jeff Tweedy book next.
