Somehow, i rattled something loose and remembered one of my favorite albums that i owned on CASSETTE. Now i have to buy it unless someone has it who has AIM/ichat (hint, hint) b/c i havent been able to produce the tape.

Very nice, simple pop/rawk and/or roll with great hooks and, well, Bob Mould.

Recorded in athens too, i believe: When i first moved to athens in June '93, ryan lewis (who went on to co-found kindercore records among other accomplishments) lived on my hall. We jammed a bit and spent some time looking for practice spaces; one of the first ones we looked at was the former home of Sugar. We were like, "whoa, whatta dump. next"

Hotshot into my Top 25 of the 90's (coming soon) :hellfire:

Yeah, I was quite pleased by this when I bought it a few months ago.

Probably the last disc I absolutely HAD TO HAVE the day it came out. My roommate & I were immediately floored.

By far, best Sugar release to date. This record trumped only by Husker Du's Zen Arcade, Flip yr Wig & Warehouse.

For those who care, I was told by a reliable source that Grant Hart & Bob Mould nearly came to fisticuffs backstage at the Rock For Karl benefit last Thursday here in Minny-polis. Aging, bald rockers scratching it out for Karl. Precious.

My thoughts exactly.

I'll grant you that most avid Husker Du-bians I've rapped with deem New Day Rising & Zen Arcade the cornerstones of their catologue. I'd even venture to say that NDR, track 1, is unequivocally the strongest opening track in the HD canon. The rapid-fire drummy, ultra-fuzzy feedback and an intensely screamy Mould would floor anyone on first listen. Probably one of my Top 20 openers of all-time. But (and this is a huge, stinky 'but'), as the record keeps spinning, they tinker little with the sound which virtually mashes all tunes together like Tracks 1-6 on Antics rendering it ineffectual and boring, for lack of a ... 'Til they reach Book 'bout UFos, my second fav on NDR. There, they bring intensity to a halt & jab you with bluesy chords complemented only by piano and crisp Mouldy vocals. I don't discount NDR, I just don't hype the mutha.

Lyrically, NDR is a solid showcase of Mould's writing & vocal abilities. I just happen to find the aforementioned players much more agreeable to the palate.

Please shut me the f*ck up in your defense.

edit: engrish - boss keeps peering over shoulder

Nah, everybody's entitled to their own opinion, but I don't agree with it. New Day Rising, at least most days, is my favorite of the HD canon. I really think it's the most consistent record they did, and has some of the best songwriting by both Mould and Hart. I agree with your assessment of the opener, but I think it only gets stronger with there, reaching its peak at the centerpiece "Celebrated Summer." The songwriting, and the way the songs seem to work together well as a whole, even though they're pretty evenly split Mould/Hart, and even the production all get an A+ from me, making it one of my favorite albums of the 80s (and that's saying something, not because it's from me, but because there are a ton of albums I love from the 80s). I love the other HD albums too (and am a big fan of Copper Blue, but none is as enjoyable to me as NDR.
