Here's Eight Dirty Old Towns

1. Ewen MacColl (Kirsty's dad, he wrote it)
2. Ted Leo and the Pharmacists
3. Gilles Servat
4. Frank Black
5. U2 (Larry Mullen vocals)
6. Dubliners (had the hit in the 50's)
7. Mountain Goats
8. Pogues

Could have put The Popes version on, I guess. Also, if anyone has Simple Minds version, that's a good one.

I was watching a movie the other day...Song Collector or something like that... about a woman gathering songs in Appalacia, old blue grass sorta stuff, largely derrived from old Irish and Scottish songs, and they were singing a song with the exact music of Dirty Old town but with different lyrics. Anybody know if that song evolved from something older? Anybody know what the original source was?

Great song in any case.

MacColl wrote Dirty Old Town for a play he was in with Peggy Seeger in 1949. Don't know if he based it on an earlier melody but he supposedly wrote it in just a few minutes to use as a time filler between scenes.
