I have two big problems with my computers, but this one is bugging me more at the moment...

On my desktop at hom, my internet service is AOL for Broadband.. I know i know, but i get a super rate on it cause i know people...

anyways, when i hook my cable modem up to my laptop, I cannot get my laptop to detect the modem and allow me to log on...It just won't detect it..

I have went through and made sure the setting are exactly the same as I have them on my desktop, but to no avail.

Ineed to update and transfer some stuff to my laptop, but it needs some updating, and I can only get online thru a dial up...

any idea's?

It's a Sony Vaio running Windows XP - Home Edition btw.

muchas gracias.

You could try uninstalling the modem, shut down your system, turn it back on and allow it to detect the hardware and reinstall itself. Might work.

check and see if you have the same protocols installed on your laptop as on your home comp - right click on network neighbourhood or whatever it is, go to properties and see

Is the Desktop running Win XP? THat's weird, because XP is pretty good at automatically detecting network setups and such.

Buy a cheap ass router, you can get them for $20 or even free with rebates, then you can network up both computers to both be on the internet at the same time, and see each other.

Get back to me when you get one, and I'll walk you thru it.

Maybe we can pay haq to consult :P

look at the setup of your home computer and see what DNS server and gateways and shit it's using and duplicate that shit on your laptop. the laptop might be not detecting it because, from it's standpoint, there's nothing worth detecting there. or maybe it's trying to keep you from using AOL. your laptop is your friend. a friend...with benefits.

1) Unplug the Modem or router from the power (no lights)
2) Make sure your Network settings are for DHCP (leave all the DNS stuff and Gateway/Router stuff blank) and restart computer.
3) Re power up the modem.
4) Launch Internet Explorer and goto www.obner.org

PC or Mac these steps are pretty much the same. Good luck.
