So what's the general board consensus on Oberst aka Bright Eyes or whatever else.

I have had periods of loving him and hating him.

I'm through all this literal crap. For some reason, I really enjoy a great deal of his songs.

Sue me.

*edit* This IS a question.

He's done some decent songs.

I saw him play a solo live show once and absolutely hated it.

I've heard he can be good playing with a group, though.

Either way I don't care much.

Understandable.

I'm an 18-year old, often stressed out and psuedo-depressed youth, though.

Basically, i fit the target audience.

I fit the 'target audience' too then, but i still can't bring myself to listen to him. Though i am amused by the irrational hatred he seems to bring out in people.

He sucks. We shoulda tarred and feathered him when he opened for Mates of State and DCFC in '99. I've seen Cat Power twice and she's got nothing on him. He's a disaster.

Why the hell are there so many threads dedicated to this guy?

I saw him once on the Late Show. I thought he was fine, but I never bothered checking him out further.

i really have nothing against him and i quite liked "Lifted" for several months there (though i kinda lost interest). he's definitely one of those artists i'll always be interested to see what he's planning next, etc., even though i probably won't like much of it!

but yeah, talk about an easy target...

i'm kinda somewhere in that league. I might enjoy about 6 of his songs, but i do admire him for what he said about the clear channel. good for him.

"He wants YOUUU, Malachi."
For some odd reason, he reminds me of the preacher boy, Isaac, from Children of the Corn.

he averages one decent song every two albums or so. His voice annoys me, and i don't go out of my way to check his stuff out anymore, as when i was a teacher, more than a few of my kids were like, "hey have you heard of blahblahblah?" and so much of it was Saddle Creek Bullshit and Dashboard, and i was ready to drive my truck into the nearest Sam Goody and wage war. They'd never see it coming.

exactly.

i bought "lifted" and there were like 2 good songs on it maybe. "bowl of oranges" is the only one i can think of. kid should go for melody a little bit more and actually write a decent song instead of all that bullshit howling.
