Neil Young is the closest Northern Ontario gets to soul, methinks.

northern soul isn't a typical genre, so it's difficult to pinpoint artists that are specific to it. it's more about individual songs since the scene wasn't necessarily about the best but instead the rarest, at least for many years.

get started:

the flirtations - "nothing but a heartache"
erma franklin - "piece of my heart"
bobby garrett - "i can't get away"
dobie gray - "the in crowd"
gloria jones - "tainted love"
garnet mimms - "it was easier to hurt her"
diane newby - "what you're putting me through"
dean parrish - "tell her"
the show stoppers - "ain't nothin' but a house party"
edwin starr - "25 miles"
r. dean taylor - "there's a ghost in my house"
carla thomas - "i'll never stop loving you"
don thomas - "come on train"
jamo thomas - "i spy (for the fbi)"

Don't forget "Cry Baby" as well. What about the Capitols "Cool Jerk"?

So would Motown be consider northern soul?

I'm really unclear on the boundaries of this sub-genre.

some motown records are northern. it started as a movement by djs in northern britain to play obscure soul records. that was it. as long as it had a good beat to dance to and hadn't charted, it was pretty much northern soul. that's why there are tales of djs coming over to the US and rummaging through thrift stores and taking crates of 45s back with them - just trying to find something that no other dj had. it's not clear at all. for instance, chess had some major hits, but there are also chess singles considered northern classics. and then it expanded at one point, but then nearly any modern soul tune was northern and they were making music just for the scene. i think it started out great because it thrives on discovery of forgotten records that should've been massive.

Where's bluestar when you need her?

Or, even when you don't actually?

I suppose I should just check AllMusic. Wikipedia had an interesting entry but didn't list too many artists.
