FT, tkyd and I have been started a private file sharing network using WASTE. But we need more people to join us! So don't be shy! It should work for everyone, and there's no worries about who's watching you.

PM me if you're interested, and I'll give you the info you need to get connected.

I posted this in the other thread, but can you give a little more info re: WASTE?

How is this different than a slsk-type program?

It works just like soulseek in many ways. You can search for files and browse other users' songs. It also has chat features so we recreate the CMJ room.

The major differences are the extra security it provides by being a private network, and the ability to connect Windows and Mac users. I'm new to it too, so I'm still discovering everything it can do. But I like what I see so far.

So: instead of files being accessible to anyone in the world, we will ONLY be sharing with each other? Do you control access to our private network?

I was reading on sourceforge that there may be problems with local IPs: people behind firewalls or running their own private networks might have trouble connecting.

Ah, what the hell. I'll download it now and give it a try.

When you install it you create a public key. Only the people you give the public key to can access your files.

It's best to set your router to forward port 1337, much like you do with soulseek.

I believe this creates a huge security hole. Aaron can verify this for.

How would this be creating a security hole? It is only letting a connection to port 1337 through my router, something that would automatically be coming through if I plugged my PC directly into my cable modem, bypassing the router altogether.

Pretty fast, depending on both people's connections. You're connecting directly, so no slowdown from a centralized server. However, everything gets encrypted, so that slows it down a little. Last night I didn't notice much of a difference between this and a straight FTP download speed.
