Yea basically, but they keep the history of updates.

I used it to find gas in town when there was a shortage last fall. That was definitely helpful when people posted where they were able to find gas and how long the lines were.

I've used it to track down friends at a concert, gotten up to the minute weather and traffic conditions while on the road, and I've heard that at the last few SXSWs it was "THE" go-to to track down the best shows and parties. And to be honest, I've got a few folks that this is about the only way I get word of their whereabouts these days, so I check it every few hours and mostly like what I read.

I'll also admit however that I've not joined the Facebook world, and most likely, I never will, so... meh, whatever.

I really only use it as a front-end for updating my facebook status...and even that I haven't been doing much lately

I also use it for business, but only via the people I follow...some of those people have the same content on both twitter and their blog...so once again, redundant

so, I don't know how long this will last

a lot of marketers also use twitter as online PR.

I've used them all over the past couple of months, and I have found TwitterFon to be the best of the lot, when combining functionality with ease of use. There are a couple of others which are prettier/flashier, but ultimately fall short.

Bob, I'll be on within a few days. Gonna tie a bunch of social networks together to one source (Digster, maybe?) to help my freelance work and keep up with even more obscure, useless trivia/tidbits about everything and nothing, etc.

Not to sound like a Luddite or anything, because the Web is my favorite entertainment source ( over TV, etc. ) . And I have a MySpace & a Facebook page.

But at this point...Gawddamn...enough already.

Without question, its best and most worthwhile use is for relaying information in a somewhat closed community. The SXSW example from above is a good one.

At the paper we used it extensively to quickly relay information during and after Hurricane Ike - many people without power but who had a cell phone later told us our Twitter feed was their only source of news during the storm. We also used it for mini reports about the goings on during ACL Fest; for little news bursts and observations more than reviews

Fu and I were talking about this the other night and he mentioned this article about 10 creative uses for Twitter. http://sem-group.net/search-engine-opti ... tter-uses/
I really love the laundry room one.

All that said and for all the good possible from it, most times it's navel gazing taken to a ridiculously high level.

I did a running diary from last night's Pollie Awards. The biggest fan of this should be Yail Bloor - because he is usually inundated with texts from me when I go to things like this.

Also, it's sort of the 21st Century Gonzo Journalism - instead of napkins and notebooks, you thumb it into your handheld and the computer keeps a record of it.

KrylonKronikles is my handle, btw.

Like with everything else online, I'm andyfest.

I tweet/twit my last.fm journal entries occasionally but generally use twitter to subscribe to topics I'm interested in.
