From another board-I thought you guys might be able to help.

Quote:
My niece is turning 14 this week (hard to believe!) and she's also going to the New Orleans Jazz Festival with her class this year. I thought that I would get her a CD of music by New Orleans local musicians to give her a taste of the music that she'll get to hear.

Can anyone make a recommendation? Preferably, it should be something available here, www.amazon.ca, and in stock. I need it by Saturday.

When we were in Chicago, the airport gift shops had CD compilations of various local Chicago blues legends. I'm hoping to find something similar from New Orleans.

Thanks.

http://www.amazon.ca/New-Orleans-Funk-Various/dp/B00004Y246/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1267557381&sr=8-3

is really good and is available for a reasonable price on Amazon.ca

Soul Jazz's Saturday Night Fish Fry is also great but harder to find now.

Those are great for N.O funk but don't have Brass Bands or Zydeco which are also heavily represented at Jazzfest.

this:

http://www.amazon.com/Doctors-Professors-Kings-Queens-Orleans/dp/B0002RUPGU

is the holy grail of N.O. comps but I didn't see it on Amazon.ca and it would probably be more than he'd want to spend anyway.

Royal Fingerbowl's "Happy Birthday, Sabo!" Album is a great slice of New Orleans - flavored ditties.

There are a ton of NOLA comps out there.

This one is probably more specific than what the person is looking for, but it's one of my favorites http://www.amazon.com/Finger-Poppin-Sto ... 584&sr=8-5

Also, this website is the best around for NOLA music http://www.louisianamusicfactory.com/default.asp If you can't find it there, it doesn't exist. I realize it won't work for this guy but it's a great resource nonetheless.

This comp looks to be exactly what he is looking for http://www.louisianamusicfactory.com/sh ... uctID=6297

I may order it myself.

They have it at amazon.ca as well http://www.amazon.ca/New-Orleans-Essent ... 054&sr=8-2

Something by The Iguanas who are also playing Jazzfest. Pretty sure they always do.

Used to be a tenner floating around that was one of my faves from that thread. Was that you Billy?

Great band.

Yeah I did an iguanas tenner. I really like them and you Finche certainly pass a link to the tenner on to that guy. Now that the search function works, I'll let Finchey find it on his own. I think someone might have done a Subdudes tenner too and I'd imagine they will be playing as well.

Neither are quite the atypical Jazzfest band though so I wouldn't recommend a single artist album by either as THE ONE thing someone should listen to in prep for a Jazzfest trip.
