he caught wind that the girl he was dating at the time was going to dump him, so he took her out for an extravagant dinner, ordered up expensive wine, etc., then right before the check came he "went to the restroom" never to return

Thank you all for the kind words (and levity). Unfortunately, we're both still living under the same roof for the time being. She's trying her best to drive me out of the house with her actions and words, but I'm not abandoning my girls for anything. I am getting some small measure of joy with each phone call I receive from her friends after she's broken the news. So far the common themes are "what the fuck - is she for real?" and "you need to fight for full custody."

Same here. She's already shown she's reckless and irresponsible. Fryxell, I've been in a similar home-life situation, albeit with no kids or marriage involved, and because of that I was probably feeling only 1/10 of of the soul-crushing you're going through, but I came out a much better Man and person because of it, which led me into the ability to be fit enough to be married to another human. I wish for you the same or better level of upside out of a rough period.
