that "one more saturday night" was great, that song rarely makes me sit up and notice as it's usually just a rote whatever, but this version jumped right in and was super fast and energetic.

the way you guys talked about Dark Star, and my usual fear of Dark Star had me braced for the worst but it was a pretty smooth ride.

... Seriously? I just logged in to say how much I liked it, though I was startled at first. "Looks Like Rain" kind of sounded like a Neil Young song with Ben Keith on the steel.

This is definitely one of my favourite Bobby songs, and this is a smooth, languid version, an approach that I'd yet to hear. LLR is chameleon-like in the differing ways it's performed. I'm curious to see if all versions on this tour are like so.

i'm with you jsh, i thought it was a highlight. i don't recall ever hearing a jerry-slide version before. but also like you, this is one of my favorite tunes, so i think i also really appreciated how different it was from what i'm used to.

A highlight for me too but then I'm a bit biased by the steel. 'Caution' wrecked this joint, and 'One More Saturday' finished it. I'm calling the former track an outright highpoint for the tour and hope to be disappointed. Initially, I was leaning towards calling it a disappointment in comparison to the opener but after a second listen today, I'm definitely backtracking. Even 'Playing in the Band', traditionally not my favourite point, really grabbed me. I didn't get a decent uninterrupted listen to 'Dark Star' though, so I'm witholding judgement.

Finally, despite having heard 'Casey Jones' about a billion times now, I still get off, every time.

I thought the "Caution..." was a highlight as well. Fucking excellent playing after what I'm still calling a shambolic and disjointed DS.

I'll go back and peep "Rain" again. Maybe I missed something because I am a fan of both the song and the pedal steel in general usually.

i've been inching through these shows verrrry piecemeal, unfortunately, but I was again grabbed by a Bobby song on a second turn through 4/8. Black Throated Wind is heartfelt, played and sung with fervor, and a definite highlight for me.

Ace came out in 72, so i guess it makes sense that those songs are showing up so much.

just gave a close listen on a nice walk and actually really enjoyed the dark star, though it might just be a fit to my current mood. aside from an abrupt re-bort of the second verse, they really committed to exploration in the meat of it, and made it pop towards the end, in much more orderly fashion. even the sugar magnolia out of it and into caution is excellent.

The next show had a Part 1 and Part 2 but when I opened them they were the same. Let me know if there are any problems. Also, given that there were 20 downloads of the first show, I know that there are some more people out there who might be interested in following along. Just send me a PM and I'll hook you up. Everybody else, you know the drill.

It'll be interesting to compare this Rain with the last one. Excited to hear that Brokedown Palace.

diving in to 4/11 this morning. starting to have slight regrets at not throwing down the clams on the limited steamer-trunk box set. by all accounts, it looks like they did this thing right:

Image

i like the way everything is housed inside too:

though, the first one i saw for sale online is asking $1200 already.

i did see that dead.net is starting to sell the individual shows, which is nice. plus all sorts of '72 stickers, magnets and buttons.

got about halfway through and enjoyed what I heard. I don't know how much we'll be able to say about each show after just three shows its starting to run together. I promise not to mention Ace again (at least on this page) but you can kinda tell that those songs are all fresh as he's really singing the hell out of them.

I tried pre-order it way back when it was first announced and I couldn't do a Canada order. By the time it was fixed, they were sold out.

Haven't downloaded the new set yet, am off to do it now in preparation for the morning.

Just to be clear, there's only a part 1 for this show?

There was a Part 1 and Part 2 for the show but they appeared to be identical so I deleted the link I had uploaded for Part 2. Was I wrong there?

When I extracted part1 earlier I only have CD1 and 2. It may be that the original uploader messed up. I think we can find CD3 easy enough.

So this show is pretty darn good. Not much wear I hear yet.

Greatest Story has got a heavy wah on that jam, dig it.
Good Deal and Sugaree.
I always loved that Brown Eyed Women, so damn singable as many are.
On the Looks Like Rain, pretty close but I'd say that last show is better.
Big Railroad is great here.
Nice to hear that Brokedown Palace, well done, nice keys on there.

Question: Is there a preference here of singers singing? I am not sure I have one, more depends on if I like the song's groove.

This was my concern from the start but I guess we shall see.

I really like when they speed them up like this one. Also, Jerry sounds a little like Rick Danko in places. (Aside: The Band would have done a sweet version of BEW)

This and "China Doll" are such great little ditties.

I think Pig is probably the best singer at this point but I agree with you that its highly dependent on the song. Garcia is a pretty weak singer but he can absolutely make a song when he's on (and kill it when he's not). He's also a pretty underrated backing vocalist.

Phil is absolutely killing it on this show.

One of the great crescendos in all of Balladry. The Band/Dead could def exchange a few tunes.

This may be a case of the usual "picked up more on the second listen" deals, but this one didn't have a moment. My first thought is that the energy level seems a bit muted but I'm actually going to go ahead and chalk it up to the volume level (I was playing it low in my office). I'm going through it again tomorrow with headphones.

Pig is the best singer but they tend to be on real straight forward songs that go on for a really long time. He's sounded particularly fantastic so far.

Ramble on Rose recently clicked for me and is now one of those songs I look forward to when I see it on a set list. Question for those that might know it better. Was the weird off-key melody piano part something they did often, or was that an early sign of Pigpen losing it?

At first it sounded really cool and intentional, but then I wasn't so sure and then he kinda went back to a more traditional lick out of nowhere and the two parts didn't go together. I was picturing people looking at him like, "get your shit together."
