Also, Sun Ra put out like 8 albums in 1966.

Pet Sounds, The Monks, and Revolver would all be in my top 6. I have Miles Smiles as '67.

(Edited since Todd beat me to that Kinks album.)

Here are 6 more from a spectacular year:
Image

John Coltrane - Meditations
Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention - Freak Out!
Ike & Tina Turner - River Deep/Mountain High
Cecil Taylor - Unit Structures
Ennio Morricone - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly OST
Albert Ayler - Spirits Rejoice

You realize that 4 of the 7 albums you posted are from American bands right?

Not an incredibly deep year for rock and most of my favorites have already been mentioned (Love, Byrds, Kinks, Stones, Dylan)

Some good jazz, country and soul that hasn't been mentioned yet though:

I have Symphony for Improvisers as '67 as well, or else I would have listed it instead of Spirits Rejoice (and really over Unit Structures if we were ranking them).

+ 1 on all the obvious choices already mentioned.

An even bigger + 1 for Joe Henderson, Merle, and one of the finer Sinatra produced releases. That one is a recorded gem.

....and Drinky, you're correct. Thanks. thought Miles Smiles was '66

Yeah, RYM didn't list it as '66 but AMG does and FR said in the beginning that we are going by AMG dates. Not sure which is right but I'm just following the instructions. There are a bunch of releases I might have picked based off RYM release dates such as Paul Bley "Closer" or Porter Wagoner "Soul of a Convict" but AMG didn't have them as '66, and don't get me started on AMG listing Baden Powell and Vinicus de Moraes "Os Afro Sambas" as 2006 (Reissue) instead of its original release.

I'm not trying to be the release date police. I know Rabbit said we're going by AMG dates, but I'm too lazy to cross-check everything with there. Just posting images feels like a lot of work for me.

I was more just pointing out that I probably would have posted those things if I had them listed as '66 instead of '67.

Although I do still trust RYM more than any other source for release dates. Symphony for Improvisers was recorded in September of '66, and I'd be surprised if it was actually released that same year.

I used AMG as the decider because its not user-induced like wiki or RYM. Am I correct that users control the content of RYM?

I also used AMG because its a known-entity to more people, and if there wasn't one source, then it would lead to all types of questions of what came out when (such as the first Bon Iver record--just as an example).

For older releases, user control has actually made RYM more reliable, I've found. Someone just sets the release date for an album on AMG and then moves on to the next entry. If it's wrong, it stays wrong, and there's no constant community input/scrutiny to have it changed. To make matters worse, music sites all over the internet just copy and paste content from AMG, so when AMG gets something wrong, misinformation spreads like a virus.

But like I said, I don't want to start debating release dates.

I'll stop mentioning the discrepancies, but I'm not sure if I'm going to double-check all of my own stuff with AMG dates, either. I have everything organized by RYM dates, and it would be too much of a headache for me to try to do it differently.

Yeah.
But that doesn't change the fact that there is a lot of great English pop.

I was just trying to liven this place up :(

Nah, I got what yr saying. The basic premise is to get people interested in what others consider their favorites of the year and hopefully expose some new albums to people. If it fluctuates a year or so whatever. The key is, you dig the record and probably think others should listen to it.

Yeah, I didn't really want to make the release date stuff into a thing.

I'm glad you're doing this.

I'm with you on RYM being both easier but it takes all of a minute or two to cross reference with AMG so no big deal really. To me it's more of an issue of things like the Paul Bley "Closer" falling through the cracks because I eliminate it from '66 because AMG lists it as '65 but when FR asks for a six pack for '65, I probably won't remember this and will start again with what I own that RYM lists as '65. Who cares though, it's not hard to find 6 albums that I really like that RYM and AMG agree on the release year.

Right, this is more the issue. I agree that it's not really that big a deal to cross-reference (so far I don't think I've listed anything AMG would count as a different year, but that's just due to luck), but the problem is more stuff I'll miss which is what I've brought up here.
