The guitars are nice. The Springsteen cum Replacements intensity is nice. I am always a sucker for melodic thrashing rock (Dramarama) and the c major to a minor chord change, but the vocals kill it for me. Recorded too up front exposing stoopid lyrics, a cheesy voice, and a guy who is trying much too hard....

It was alright, but they still haven't made me a fan. I found myself drifting out on about the third song.

I haven't given them a huge chance, but that's how I've always felt when I've listened.

It's in my wheelhouse, but he seems to be signing what he thinks he's should know, not what he knows.

but of course, Johnny Cash never shot a man in Reno just to watch him die, but I feel it when he sings it, even if I don't believe it.

Steven Hyden destroys this record on Grantland

I still haven't heard it despite being a fan. Might give it a twirl today.

Steven Hyden is an scene-friendly ironist from Appleton, Wisc. If you know him at all from when he was the local ed for the ONION av club Milwaukee, you'll know he didn't even like Ke$ha (though he claimed he did).

I don't trust his opinions of music/art any farther than it takes me to walk from my bed to my bathroom. (Those rooms are adjacent.)

Yeah, I know him mainly from the AV Club. I guess he's a regular now on Grantland (as well?)

I don't mind him much.

He lost me with his rumination on Semisonic & the end of the mass-market single/universal audio experience. All he proved was nostalgia is, & that, at the moment, that means use of songs from the mid-to-late-nineties, which is when much of Hollywood's creative class of the moment was coming of age. (The premise of the article was the use of "Closing Time" in three different movies in the preceding six months: Friends with Benefits, American Reunion, &... [channelling Rick Perry] I cannot remember the third.)

Of course, Ol' Stevie was attempting to prove that nostalgia isn't.
