I've managed to find a lot more that I like from 1986 over the past few years. I probably wouldn't consider it a contender for worst year ever anymore, but it's still not a favorite.

+1
Sonic Youth
The Smiths
XTC
REM
Robyn Hitchcock
Giant Sand

Which leaves me with:

The Feelies – The Good Earth
Slayer – Reign in Blood
Big Black - Atomizer
Elvis Costello and the Attractions – Blood & Chocolate
Camberwell Now – The Ghost Trade
John Zorn - The Big Gundown

86 is a year that sneaks up on you. Definitely a year I forgot or misthought when certain records came out.

+1s on REM, Giant Sand, XTC, Robyn Hitchcock

I don't own that Van record but I've heard it over at my FiL's house--it's got some good shit on it.

There really is too much to choose from. I'd definitely have the Smiths and PiL on my top 6 list, and these three that haven't been mentioned (I don't think):

It is indeed a sneaky year. Some great ones already noted. I could add several more, but will limit it to:

Frighteningly fine album, even by his standards.
