How have you guys not talked about No Joy yet in this thread?

I mean it's pretty derivative shoegaze/dream pop, but it's just so catchy and addictive.

I do kind of hate that video for "Hare Tarot Lies", though. Maybe just listen and don't watch.

Also I want to check out all the stuff that aerodynamics posted. The only one of those bands that I've heard is Saturday Looks Good to Me who I like but had kind of forgotten about.

Bon Voyage!

Bon Voyage is the side-project of Starflyer 59 leadman Jason Martin, where his wife does vocals. They have three albums, but for my money their first, self-titled album is the main one worth paying attention to.

Yay! So excited!

New York twee-pop outfit Cults are back with the follow up to their debut self-titled album. It's called Static, and it's out October 15 via Columbia. It was produced by Cults with Shane Stoneback (who worked on their debut) and Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Washed Out, Youth Lagoon). Watch a teaser for the album below, which features album tracks "We've Got It" and "So Far".

Joanna Gruesome 'Weird Sister' (Slumberland)

pretty cool stuff...
streamed it several times so far....

anyone have a link?

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/184 ... rd-sister/

Quote:
One minute, Joanna Gruesome's Alanna McArdle is ditching school and floating from Cardiff to New Orleans on a scooter. The next, she's planning to pull out your teeth, gouge out your eyes with a razorblade, and bash in your fucking skull. Clearly, McArdle isn't fucking around; neither, it seems, are Joanna Gruesome. (I'm told they met in anger management, a story almost too good to be true.) The regrettably named Welsh fivesome's debut LP, Weird Sister, crams an awful lot into a little under half an hour: hardcore blastbeats, fuzzed-out twee, violent urges, zombies and pentagrams. Weird Sister is one of the most purely exuberant, hook-stuffed indie-pop records you're likely to hear this year. But it is not afraid of you, and it will beat your ass.
Produced by MJ of up-and-coming UK psychsters Hookworms, Weird Sister is largely comprised of new versions of nascent Gruesome singles. In a show of unity, the band-- McArdle included-- have each adopted the Gruesome surname, Ramones/Campesinos! style. Drummer Dave Gruesome, a hardcore kid born decades too late, plays like somebody's lit the end of his sticks on fire. Name change notwithstanding, guitarists George and Owen Gruesome seem separated at birth, their twin assault forking only to give Owen-- who occasionally joins McArdle on vocals-- a half-second to catch his breath. Yet, for all their frantic fuzzbombing, Joanna Gruesome don't skimp on melody. Verses slam into bridges before crashing headlong into choruses, a carefully considered cacophony that'd be almost as striking played at half-speed. By the time one of these hooks have lodged their way into your skull, it seems three equally worthy candidates have already zipped by.
At the center of the fracas is McArdle. She stomps, screams, and shouts her way through plenty of Weird Sister, as though, if she didn't open her mouth, these songs would come bursting forth from her chest just the same. Yet she delivers nearly as much of this tough talk in a sweet, essentially affectless tone, dispassionately hinting at a looming explosion before doing exactly that. These tectonic shifts between ferocity and something approaching tenderness are matched note-for-note by the Gruesomes, who'll follow up a spindly, soft-focus verse with a sudden burst of noise, lending Weird Sister an unpredictability it never seems to shed. This volatility's key to Weird Sister's liveliness; you could listen to this album a couple dozen times and still not be able to quite see what's around the corner. Could be another Dave Gruesome anti-solo; could be Alanna, brandishing a knife.
Weird Sister's frenzied tone sometimes causes leads to a bit of motion blur; there's not a bad song in the bunch, but when everything's this revved-up and scuzzed-out and just plain exhilarating, slowing your mind down long enough to pick out a highlight seems a thankless task. Still, "Mickey"-style chanter "Secret Surprise" may be the best of the bunch, tumbling from its punchy verse into an especially sweet, soft-focus chorus, throwing a little whizz-bang guitar onto the pile, then toppling over. "Lemonade Grrrl" starts out almost bashful; by the end of Dave Gruesome's drum interlude, that placidity's a pile of broken glass. Shouter "Graveyard" moves from an echoey Edge-style guitar intro to a Thurston-worthy squeal before dipping into a regal chorus not far from UK twee-poppers Veronica Falls. But you don't listen to Weird Sister for the individual moments so much as the push-and-pull between them. Joanna Gruesome's forever pulling you close, asking for your ear, then screaming bloody murder into it.
McArdle sings with more impact than precision, and her band's distortion-slathered music frequently matches her powerhouse voice fervor-for-fervor. That means, as often as not, picking up on every last shout becomes a somewhat flummoxing task. (McArdle was kind enough to type up the lyrics and send them my way, but even her version came with a couple conspicuous blank spots and one instance of "nonsense noises.") Still, compared to yet another reverb-dunked mumbler who isn't even trying to say much of anything, I'll take the gale force McArdle every time. And even when her words get lost in the fray, the Gruesomes are there to punctuate each sentence. Besides, the well-past-promising Weird Sister-- a deeply passionate, impossibly noisy twee record-- just feels like the sort of thing you spend months and years with, not days and weeks, poring over every little detail, memorizing each scrappy hook. That might just be the weirdest thing about Weird Sister: you think it's going for your throat, then it gets you right in the chest.

The Casket Girls

not exactly the criteria I am looking for, as per this thread, but not shabby, and getting multiple listens...

http://exystence.net/blog/2014/02/16/th ... tale-2014/

Quote:
The Casket Girls‘ 2012 debut, Sleepwalking, was a darkly haunted affair, its creepy textures and cemetery-at-midnight harmonies the result of a chance meeting between Black Moth Super Rainbow‘s Ryan Graveface and sisters Elsa and Phaedra Greene. Graveface gave the relative strangers a stack of instrumentals he’d been working on and the sisters fleshed them out into full-on songs with their dour lyrical imagery and untrained, homespun melodies.
For second album True Love Kills the Fairy Tale, the trio repeated this somewhat unorthodox creative process, again calling on drummer TW Walsh to play live percussion over Graveface’s roller-rink electronic rhythms. True Love Kills the Fairy Tale retains some of the spooky, misty,…

…ghost-in-the-graveyard qualities of its predecessor, but the overall feel is far more dreamy and textural, offering something more spirited than emotionally uneasy. Built on an overused, grating Casio rhythm preset, album opener “Same Side” immediately transcends its played-out musical backdrop with Elsa and Phaedra’s searching harmonies and interlocking vocal melodies. The songs have a heightened drive this time around, with choruses to tunes like “Chemical Dizzy” and the brilliant title track having an almost anthem-like catchiness. Always singing in tandem, with off-kilter lyrics about everything from doing drugs to daily living triggering oppressive ennui, the Greene sisters seem almost detached from Graveface’s increasingly synth pop instrumentals. While the songs on True Love Kills the Fairy Tale are solid as is, the melodies and vocal arrangements are so strong, one wonders what they’d be like dropped somewhere other than atop Graveface’s watery vintage synth-based instrumentals. Exciting and moving, the songs on True Love Kills the Fairy Tale would work just as well stripped-down and spare as they do in the intricately produced electro-pop forms presented here.

About this item
Product Description
Recorded at legendary producer Peter Katis' Tarquin Studios (The National, Interpol) in just ten days last November, ''Honeyblood'' is an accomplished and delightfully fierce record. ''Peter was the perfect match for us,'' Stina said of the recording. ''He perfectly managed to capture our live performance in the studio. These songs represent good times for us.'' Despite their minimal setup (singer/guitarist Stina Tweeddale) and drummer Shona McVicar), Honeyblood's songs are fully formed and perfectly assured. With nothing extraneous, their music is driven through tightly bound instrumentals and laced with the sheer strength and beauty of Stina's voice. The songs resonate with deep melodic hooks and the kind of uncomplicated charm that've drawn contemporary comparisons to the likes of the Dum Dum Girls, as well as the strident delivery of Jenny Lewis. The band also tellingly cite the darker currents of The Breeders, PJ Harvey and Throwing Muses as lifelong influences. From the urgent guitar and dive-bomb drums of opener ''Fall Forever,'' the album twists through the gutsy punk of ''Killer Bangs,'' to reveal discordant anthems like ''Super Rat.'' it has paired down alt pop gems in the likes of ''Biro' and ''No Spare Key,'' but also more country/folk influenced moments like, ''(I'd Rather Be) Anywhere But Here,'' ''Braidburn Valley'' and ''Bud.'' Honeyblood pulls in elements of lo-fi punk rock, unfettered indie pop and a deep seated passion for classic rootsy song crafting that help give the album something of an undeniable feel. The band started from humble DIY beginnings, organizing their own guerilla show at The Old Hairdressers in Glasgow to commemorate the release of a raucous two-track cassette entitled, ''Thrift Shop,'' recorded in their bathroom with one mic. Honeyblood quickly ingrained themselves into the bustling Glaswegian scene, fast becoming one of its most talked about names in town. They released a debut limited 7-inch ''Bud'' in late 2014, produced by Rory Atwell (Palma Violets, Veronica Falls) and supported the likes of Palma Violets and Sleigh Bells as well as playing festivals everywhere from Brighton's Great Escape to their native T In The Park. But with their debut US tour under their belts, big name support slots with the likes of Real Estate, and the full-length ready to release, 2014 certainly looks to be the year with Honeyblood's name written all over it.

Review
''If you're looking for some sugary crunch to your day, 'Killer Bangs' is the ticket, with rolling drums providing the backbone for toothache-inducing guitars and one hell of a central hook.'' --Pitchfork

''Sparkling harmonies from Honeyblood are helping me bid farewell to summer. This week I've been digging the first single from the Scottish duo, which boasts a spare-but-infectious pop sound.'' --USA Today's Pop Candy

''There are a ton of wicked reference points to get excited about--a vague hint of The Vaselines, nice touch of Velvet's two-chord simplicity and even bit of Moz (solo, circa 'Viva Hate') chucked in for good measure in the melody.'' --Nme

BTW - I get the brunette.
