I bought and sold well at Reading record fair yesterday, these are some of the 78's
picked up at various prices from 75p to £2 and there were some LP's and 7"s but I'll post those later.

Image

This 78 is especially rare as it was a charity single and includes a spoken introduction
by The Queen's husband into a song sung by Frank Sinatra and featured in ‘Gay’s The Word’
the last stage show written by Ivor Novello in 1951 - listen

Image

Image

a French disc in beautiful near mint condition, with a bit of research I found
it was released in 1947 and was the debut release by The Charlie Parker Quartet

Image

Image

a one-sided acetate by Quintette Of Hot Club of France aka Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli

Image

Billy Costello, the original voice of Popeye sings this song and 'Blow The Man Down' both from the 1930's

recent LP vinyl finds, some of these were in a box with a few gold London label 7"s,
they were a bit tatty and some had lost their tri-centres but nice to find anyway!

Image

I actually nearly left this as I knew nothing about it and some other records caught my eye,
but am so glad I did pick it up as it turns out to be really good and also pretty rare as well as a big blue sticker in the middle.

Image

Image

another scarce find was this 2nd LP by Sixto Rodriguez the cover of which I didn't
quite recognise until I realized someone had actually cut the front flap off!
This too turned out to be a lovely listen and an absolute keeper

Image

Image

Image
one of several Christian folk albums in with a job lot I won for £2 at the auction yesterday,
this one from 1970 by Larry Groce was the pick of the bunch

Image
also in the same box was this record of old woodwind instrument sounds,
the intro's in a really plummy voice alone are well worthy of sampling

Image

I guess it's fate that this turned up too as I only just started watching re-runs of The New Avengers at the weekend,
I am neither convinced nor scared of the blokes with guns on the rear of the sleeve

Image

Image

This great old On-U Sound album was in the box at Age Concern this morning for 49p
I already have it on vinyl & CD but could hardly leave it, especially as it had these 2 x A4 sheets
including the original press release for this and the brilliant End of The Century Party by Gary Clail

Image

Image

Image

oddest find of the week was this American album from 1967 which has some good spoken word samples
it comes with strange sleeve notes and a little info booklet

I took off on a two tip-shop trip today with naturally mixed results. The mess of vinyl
below was sold to a bloke who came in while I was there and he paid £40 for the lot,
but most had been digged through and not before I had spent half an hour grubbing about.

Image

Image

this 1972 stars of wrestling 7" sounds as good as any England football team record,
I only remember the wrestler Mick McManus among all these big boned stars

Image

Image
this Italian picture sleeve is different to UK issue

Image
soundtrack to the 1986 movie Biggles features Deep Purple, Jon Anderson and wacky dialogue clips

Image
at another tip-shop I had better digs as they had just had a delivery

Image

I picked up this bootleg out of curiosity but have not yet heard it, but worth a 50p punt

Image

Image

in the same pile was this disco 12" by the ex ballet dancer, WS1 indeed!

Image

Image
this was mixed in with several Flowered Up 12"s (I did pick up Weekender)

Image
cover versions from 1974 by the pipe toting Spanish guitarist

Image

Stephanie De Sykes sings on the wedding album of the year 1975

Image

Image
this ended up being the only single I found in the vinyl piles

a couple of unexpected finds at the indoor car boot this morning

Image

Image

Image

Image

spookily I also met my own local Ghost Detective at a car boot yesterday, our paths had first crossed
several years ago when I met him in the village and he told me of his other great love, David Bowie!
listen to side 1 : here - he also gave me his card

Image Image

OK it's not vinyl but another nice find was this 1950's board game, it has a few dice missing but is otherwise
in excellent condition and comes with it's own money but the values on the teams has changed quite a bit

albums I have found in various tip/charity/2nd hand shops in the past week

Image

I only have an old best of Donovan LP so was pleased to come across this box set for a pound,
however as I picked it up without checking it's contents I discovered it only had 2 of the 4 original discs inside,
still quite a nice find though.

Image

the cover alone caught my eye and despite not knowing who the composer was
I was pleasantly surprised by the lovely ambient Jean Michel Jarresque sounds on it.
Richard Harvey used to be in Welsh proggers Gryphon.

Image

Image

another LP which I picked up by chance (often the best way) was this album by possibly
the worlds greatest ever George Formby impersonator, and yes it has When I'm Cleaning Windows on it!

Image

my best find was this scarce album originally given to new employees of Dollond & Aitchison Opticians
instructing them how to sell even more spectacles.

Image

Image

among a box of pretty tatty Folk albums was this near mint copy by The Cheviot Hills released on the blue Topic label in 1973

Image

although this had seen better days I had to pick it up as it was only 50p

Image

Image

a truly great compilation of old radio show themes

Image

a Disco(?!) promo 7" had been slipped inside the gate-fold sleeve and was signed too!

Today we had the first big car boot round these parts, I was wandering around
a field somewhere in Northamptonshire by 6.15am but it was just as well as I would
not have found the vinyl booty below. A whole bunch of them came from the same
stall and nothing was more than a pound. The BIG one starts in 2 weeks time but
this was a good start to the booting season.

Image

The stall I found most of the records on had a pile just dumped on their table
and when flicking through I just decided it was easier to get the lot, this was
probably the best of the bunch, a Woody Guthrie 10" on Folkways from 1950.

Image

an early Peggy Seeger 10" from the 50's

Image

Image

US Blues radio show on WFMT With Big Bill Broonzy And Pete Seeger

Image

Image

Folkways album + booklet from 1966

Image

Image

a lovely 1973 Folk album on Topic by Peta Webb which was stone mint!

Image

Image

A curious oddity, I have not listened to it yet but the sleeve notes
hint at a Spiritualist theme, it was released in 1973 on White eagle

Image

Image

A lovely 2 x vinyl issue of one of the best DCD LP's released in 1993 all 3
This Mortal Coil albums in the same box too, I only had this on CD before today

Image

Oddest find of the day was this private pressing of an album by Ashdon Wait,
I couldn't find anything about this online but another LP by them is quite scarce,
of course that doesn't mean it's gonna be any good though!

Finishing up building the record shelves. Just need to sand and finish now. I'll have about 112 linear feet of shelf space.

Image

Image

And, a little cassette storage as well...

vinyl finds over the last weekend

Image

one of several albums I found in the same box, this is a great compilation of Stiffs

Image

Image

and this solo Stiff comes in fetching shade of blue, but hey it could have been yellow!

Image

Image

very odd Italian compilation put together to promote Lycra, not a great surprise
to see Rod Stewart featured then, but I wonder if Roxy Music sax player Andy Mackay
knew his image was being used for the cover?

Image

Image
lovely sleeve from Mr & Mrs Fripp but not heard it's contents yet, released on EG in '86

Image

a quick search on this charity single by the ex ELO bassist found it to be scarce now,
so not enough folk were prepared to stump up the 89p or whatever it was in 1985 to help the poor animals,
but at least I gave 50p to a charity shop for it!

Image

Image

a few tip-shop finds turned up the LP in it's horrible sleeve above and a totally
bizarre disc of recordings of Futurist & Dada sound works dating as far back as WW1.
This was released on ARK Records in 1985 and comes complete with a booklet.

Image

Image

Image

if this was a souvenir of NYC circa 1967 then I would have hoped for a more
eclectic set of tunes than this fairly safe selection from 1964 - still, a great pic of Manhattan on the front

some nice finds at one of the first big boots of the season, it was bloody cold and damp at 6.30am
but seems to have been worth it - there are several on Monday too but will be away so will miss them all, oh woe...

Image

a decent compilation of mid 70's themes by the original artists

Image

Image

a nice pair of German lasses, sorry I mean nice Sound Effects records

Image

Image

also in the same box as the German FX LP's was the best find, an album in a tri-fold sleeve
which seems (judging by the enclosed letter) to have been sent to a Mr. Duncan c/o Vauxhall in Luton
the record itself tells the story of the Bugatti car.

Image

Image

Image
I have seen many Sergio Mendes albums over the years but this is the first time I'd come across this live one

Image
another album I had not seen before was this Caravan album released on Kingdom Records in 1980
(I actually paid £3 for this, 3 times what I usually pay for records, so it better be good!)

Image
I have been collecting unusual 78's for a while now and so couldn't resist this one

Image
an odd looking comp with an unreleased Billy Connolly track released on Transatlantic in 1974

Image

it was only 50p but some of these old school recordings can have interesting tracks on, grim sleeve though

Image

Image
and the only single I have picked up this week was given to me for nothing by a kind old chap
I met at the car boot and after chatting to him for a while insisted I have it for free!

That Michigan & Smiley is a good find. 70's and 80's Reggae seems to be among the hardest things to find on vinyl.

Yeah, that was a big find. Hard to find original copies at even higher prices in pristine condition, and this one was pretty cheap.
But yeah, all three made for a nice day.

Just picked up another haul, including an original Artistry of Stan Getz 10" in great shape, along with an old 10" Django Reinhardt: Swing from Paris and some others. These 10" ones the guy just threw in for nothing, along with some old red vinyl Japanese records, including the first Marianne Faithfull, Del Shannon, and the Your Cheatin Heart Soundtrack, sunk by Hank Jr.

OK, now this one I paid retail for, but so far it's worth every penny.

Kruder & Dorfmeister: K&D Sessions
Newly reissued on vinyl, finally. Three bonus tracks add up to a 5LP set. The pressing and the remaster are fantastic and sound amazing. Comes with a 24 bit wave file download of the whole thing as well. If you like this album, and you're into vinyl, you should grab one of these before they fade away.

Just back from a break in Cumbria with some digging between fell climbing with a few unexpected finds.
and an early car boot turned up some nice 7"s but it was the charity shops of Whitehaven & Maryport
that came up with the LP's, including this first one which I had only heard about but never seen before!

Image

Image

Image

Image
in the same box as the Savile LP was this spoken word adaptation of the 18th Century erotic novel
'Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure' read by Mary Harrison - released on Dial in 1964

Image

bizarrely priced at 29p I would have left it had I not turned it over and noticed an unexpected special guest

Image

most of these singles below were from the same stall for 50p each and I was pissed I missed one box of 60's EP's
some the guy cleaned him out as I was standing there...

Image

Image
early Private Eye single - I have most of the flexis and LP's but this is the first hard vinyl PE single I've found

Image
great Cook & Moore 7" in beautiful condition

Image

one of the few EP's I did manage to get my hands on, original unboxed label

Image

Image

I recognised Jah Wobble from the cover but there is little other info on the sleeve
or label as to who this record is by - the white label has Dan MacArthur on both sides
but the a-side plays Beat the Drum For Me, the b-side is a faded-out version of Dan McArthur
and has JW being cheeky on the rear of the sleeve.

Image

Image
great Glam rocker demo from 1973

Another good day. Got a copy of Rico: Man from Wareika for 3 bucks, record is close to mint, cover has a small price tag tear but otherwise in fine shape. Also grabbed a cheap copy of The Jam: Beat Surrender 2 x 7".

a nice mix of albums at the boots this morning - nothing more than a quid!
this scarce Elvis album below was £1.50 though and is near mint but not really my cuppa tea

Image

the best finds were a couple of nice singles including this EP by Dave (Mudge) + Tim (Clutterbuck) released in 1968

Image

Image

Image

and this Oak EP which I hadn't seen before

Image

this folder/booklet issued by The National Union of Boot & Shoe Operatives had a flexi-disc
by Acker Bilk tucked inside the front inner sleeve along with an application form, it all looked
like it hadn't been touched since it was released in the early 1960's

a few more things I found over the weekend and earlier today in the charity shops

Image
the last thing I expected to come across was this CRASS album in the Mind shop

Image

I have a copy of this LP already but what was the big surprise was the paper
strip that originally went around the outside of the cover hidden away inside!

Image

Image

some old fitness albums can be quite good but I wasn't expecting to find the inserts in this copy

Image

Image
picked up a whole run of 10 Iron Maiden 12" double packs, managed to get the lot for £25
the CRASS box set actually was £5 like the spine demands

Image

always nice to find a some 78's too, the Basil & Ivor Kirchin one was the best

Image

Image

this advertising 7" for the Peugeot 104 was the only 7" I picked up today, someone had to!

Brinsley Schwarz - Nervous on the Road
Ed Bruce - One to One

Dr. John, The Night Tripper - The Sun, The Moon, the Herbs
Ducks Deluxe - Don't Mind Rockin' Tonite
Jonathan Edwards - Sailboat
Lorraine Ellison - Heart & Soul
Tommy Flanders - The Moonstone
Ellen Foley - Night Out
Marlin Greene - Tiptoe Past the Dragon
Garland Jeffreys - Rock & Roll Adult
Kilburn and the High Roads - Wotabunch
Bobby Lance - First Peace
Albert Lee - Speechless
Man - Back into the Future
Man - Welsh-Connection
Matthews Southern Comfort - Second Spring
Mel & Tim - Starting All Over Again
Buddy Miles - Live
Mink Deville - Le Chat Bleu

Doug Sahm - Doug Sahm & Band
Sir Douglas Quintet - Mendocino
The Left Banke - Walk Away Renee/Pretty Ballerina

I've been kicking myself for not picking up a Jimmy Hughes album and a Melodians album but I'd already spent so much.

I hear ya, I am trying to limit myself to 1 or 2 at a time. I listen more to the ones I get and am better off spending a bit more per record and getting things I really, really want than just going into new vinyl overload. But when you come across a good deal somewhere... well, I am only human.

Looks like quite a haul of billy g music there. That Mel & Tim album is a nice find.
