Avoid Sun Kil Moon's Universal Themes at all costs. I've enjoyed most of Kozelek's work over the years, but this is just awful. I was wondering what was going on with this dude. I saw an FB post from Jason Isbell about it being tough to be a Kozelek fan. Comparing it to being a fan of Kanye West and having to deal with his mouth. I haven't had the patience to even try with his last couple records. I just don't have time these days to sit down with hushed, contemplative, confessional stuff. Sounds like an asshole. |

I can't help feeling like his recordings and his writing have gotten progressively lazier, but at the same time he seems to have almost reached the point of being geniunely unhinged which is starting to get kind of interesting again. |

I liked Benji quite a lot (partially due to Ohio bias), but I'mm not really drawn to try the new one any time soon. |

I really liked "Benji" (the album...not the dog). But it has to be late night/early morning with just me and headphones. But Isbell was right. Saw him at the Ottobar once in Baltimore and he railed on this guy up front about "probably being a blogger who is going to review this show". It made everyone in the room feel rather awkward, since the guy was probably just a fan who adored the Koz. The guy stayed for one song and then left out the door. I wanted to go after him and buy him a beer or something--it was that humiliating. Still I find Koz absolutely fascinating, and I love a majority of the music he's put out. |
