COMPLETELY agree. Seeing him and his backing band for his tour (Twin Limb) live helped a lot for me too. Really great show.

Is that Jim James mostly acoustic? Or is it a rock band type thing?

Also that Mitski album has been growing on me with each listen.

not acoustic at all - band, but more funk than rock, actually

Yea, definitely not acoustic in the least. Funky, maybe even a little dream-poppy. His backing band on the album and tour is Twin Limb, and I think they had a big influence on the music on the album.
