I used to mainly listen to my own music because I've got so much that it's hard to enjoy it as much as I feel like I should. Recently, I've been listening to a lot of music via streaming because it's easier to pick an artist and stream than to que up 15 or 20 albums for the day. I started playing my music on speakers at the office for others to enjoy because coworkers have complained that the office is too quiet. Picking an artist to play similar music is easy to take request...Led Zeppelin for the old guy that likes classic rock...Black Keys for the guy next to me because that's his favorite band...The Tillers for the banjo guy across from me...INXS when I want a good 80's rock mix...etc. I've been using Google Music because there is a Chrome plug-in that works with my last.fm scrobbling. I know most people prefer Spotify and Pandora, but Google Play let me upload all of my mp3s so I can also access my own digital collection from anywhere. Anyways....what great bands have you come across that you might never have found since the demise of CMJ?

I'll present my first great find: The Blackwater Fever

RIYL: Black Keys, Black Angels, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club ...(or apparently the color black...)

Discovered on the Black Keys Radio Station.

Here's another band that I was first exposed to while streaming:

The Eagles of Death Metal

I had heard of them, but the name had turned me off. They aren't as Metal as I would have thought.
RIYL: QOTSA, Foo Fighters

Discovered on the Foo Fighters station

Stumbled on this album purely by fluke a couple of weeks ago and have really been digging it. It starts out with some pretty easy going jazz, but then as the album progresses it starts to sound like The Dead mixed with, like, Wayne Shorter.

Here's another group that I stumbled upon. I didn't know Dan Auerbach had a side project outside of his solo disc.

The Arcs

RIYL: Obviously, the Black Keys

Here's an '80's Brit-rock band that I was introduced to. It had a nice bit of energy and the whole song doesn't make much sense, but I thought it was fun.

Screaming Blue Messiahs

Heard on The Holy Barbarian's station. The Holy Barbarian's is a side project of Ian Astbury of The Cult.

Here's a current 2000's band that I encountered on one of the Pandora indie stations. It's basically girl fronted pop music. They have a lot of albums and tons of YouTube views...so you probably already know about them. I just thought I'd share it with ya'll that I really like them.

Metric

RIYL: Broken Social Scene, Melody Club, Lush

I'm pretty sure I got into Metric through CMJ NMM. So yeah they've been around for a while, and do indeed have a solid following. There are a few songs off their 2018 album that I really like.

As for streaming I'm all about Bandcamp now. People were posting their Spotify recaps back in December and I barely had 1000 minutes to "brag" about.

I've discovered a lot of African artists that are new to me through Spotify recs. This one being the most-consequential:

I really do love these guys. And, they've helped kick off a minor obsession with other music from the continent. So much of it. And so many different styles. A ton to discover. (Which, of course, I knew, but never really thought about.)

Totally remember Screaming Blue Messiahs and this album - the local college radio station played "I Wanna Be a Flinstone" fairly often and I picked up the album as a result and played it quite a bit back then :)
