to listen to every Genesis album in chronological order?

I'm contemplating it.

Love Genesis. There's some slog, but there's a lot of high points as well.

Foxtrot, Selling England By the Pound, A Trick of the Tail are all great.

I need to get a block of time to get started. I fired up the first one, got several minutes into the first song, got bored, looked at the tracklisting and had to go to something more motivating (I was trying to work).

I can see that. When I did it, I listened to one album a day paired with some evening reading.

The modern idea that everything has to be nice and fluffy and cuddly is complete horseshit. You need traumatic events in your life to shape you into a real human being.

I honestly couldn't hum you a Genesis song if my life depended on it but you could substitute Genesis for Rush or Kiss and emerge the realist human being of all time.

I did this with the Stones some years back, and recently went through a ton of Butthole Surfers, then Robert Palmer. I'm not really sure why, but as you said, sometimes slogging through it turns up interesting shit.

I decided to do ZZ Top instead for now, because of the documentary.

I've done a lot of these over the years. Once I did Neil Young, but weaving in and out of his bands and solo projects. Until I got to the Shocking Pinks.

From Genesis to Revelation
Released March 7, 1969

This isn't horrible. Kinda nondescript psychedelic rock. I kinda dig "The Conquerer".

Trespass

The mix/staging on this is awful and distracting. Like a lot of prog, this sounds like some band is scoring a Robin Hood movie while some other guy is overdramatically reading out of his diary.

I know this is art because it has nursery rhymes in it.

Take it away, Dan Duran (emphasis added):
"Since every early Genesis album, from Trespass to Wind& Wuthering, is absolutely unique and explores territory that no one else did, criticizing any of them is like criticizing Columbus for not taking the most perfect route to America. But at least while many took that trip subsequently and even without Columbus somebody else would have eventually discovered the continent, the territory that Genesis discovered remains largely unexplored 40 years later and if not for them, we'd have never known about it.".

This one feels more like they have come together as a band, I'll give them that.

Nursery Cryme is mercifully short.

That was awesome. And terrifying.

I hate to admit it, but...Foxtrot is definitely prog, but it's not horrible. Decent background music. I'm totally out of my element, but it feels more jammy with a theatrical vein than "Hey Look At Our Madd Musick Skillz".
