just gave the new x album, alphabetland, a listen and was very pleasantly surprised. great tunes, and especially shocked at how good JD and exene's voices sound - figured they (especially she) had probably had it by now.

It's both better than I expected and well short of any of the other albums the original lineup released. After a quick listen I think I like it better than any of the records without Billy Zoom. For my ears, he's too important to their sound to replace without sounding like a different group. It's just a bit less energy and edge than the records they did in the past, but that's to be expected considering age. I'm sure I'll play it a lot and maybe it will grow on me even more in time.

wasn't expecting much, but it definitely sounds like them back in their heyday
