Spearhead - Home

I've always seen this (maybe in the dollar bins) but never heard it. It's pretty good for a mesh of rap/soul. I guess I prefer this overall to gangsta type stuff anyway, but especially like the production. IMO Dr. Dre and the rest of the shit that was coming out circa 1994 was horribly produced.

Dana Dane With Fame

Fake British accent rapping a la Slick Rick. Overall tolerable if you like the goofy lyrical content and the delivery. The sound though looks a good deal backward to the early 80s. I'm looking for those late-80s releases that are pushing toward a new decade.

The singles on that Dana Dane album are stone cold classics. The album as a whole is a little spotty.

Are you looking for advice on the late 80s stuff?

Although I don't know if our ears will match up if you think Dr. Dre is horribly produced.

Been loving this one:

It just sounds great, all around. The production, the sound of Del's voice... I am really digging this purchase that my 9-year-old made.
(Yeah, I let him listen to some parental advisory stuff; it's mostly nothing that he hasn't heard he mother say!)

Well, I wouldn't turn down any late 80s recs, but I've just finished my third volume of hip-hop '87-'89, and that was whittled down from a ton of "slipped through the cracks" artists.

right now i'm looking to do a hip-hop '90-'94 mix. BUT to make it more challenging I don't want to repeat any of the artists I used on the '87-'89 mix, and as a personal preference I want to avoid gangsta rap (though I suppose some exception could be made if the song rules hard enough).

re: Dre - it's been ages since i've listened to any of it. but to me it always sounded, i dunno, brittle. that high pitched synth, samples and other backing sounds sounded like them came from a computer knob rather than a real instrument. i actually don't know how The Chronic was made so maybe it just boils down to me not digging it.

I can understand not liking it, but brittle doesn't make much sense to me. It's such a rich bass heavy sound.

I can post a bunch of my favorite non single diamond d and black sheep songs, if you think that would be something you'd like.

and of course, put DWYCK on the mix because it belongs on every mix.

Low Profile - We're In This Together

They only released one album. DJ Aladdin went on to work with Ice-T and WC went on to work with Ice Cube and Mack 10. This is some true '89 stuff (though according to AMG it was released in Jan '90). Quick and smooth flows, tons of samples, a good mix of street rap and funky/jazzy stuff. Some cuts are more mix worthy than others, but overall pretty solid.
