Finally got around to doing a single artist mix per rparis' thread from August. This pulls from all the Auteurs, Baader Meinhoff, and all of his solo work. I purposefully left Black Box Recorder off because I don't like them and left the Servants off because he was just a support player for them. There's also nothing on here from the Das Capital album because its orchestral and probably for collectors/completists and not good for an intro. I have it and like though. This might be a better mix if I'd pulled more heavily from the first three Auteurs albums but I wanted to make it more comprehensive.

Hope at least a few people enjoy

In case you don't know Luke, I think he's the best English artist of the last fifteen years.

for shits and giggles here's a few extracts from "63 Ways to Begin an Essay on Luke Haines" by Paul Morley:

From the liner notes to the new box set "Luke Haines is Dead"

I'm not going to type up all of 'em but a few of my favorites:

14. The grey sky, the loss of faith, the sense of being humiliated by one's time and place, the inadequacies of love and human condition. Luke Haines greedily placed all this on a slice of wholemeal toast and wolfed it down.

25. Luke Haines's Englishness is so desolate and inhospitable that even the English are scandalised by it.

31. Luke Haines tried not to be in the same place twice artistically - and to the bewilderment (and frustration, then unbridled rage) of many, he makes it work.

32. When I arrived at the pub, Luke Haines is standing on the table proposing a toast to decay.

38. I just hope Luke Haines doesn't go on one hunt too many and find himself, as twilight gathers and the fields fall silent, lying face down in his own bullshit.

39. Luke Haines commits songs just as other people commit adultery.

44. Morrissey mostly contents himself with a saddened shake of the head, a devastating weapon in its way, but one that doesn't leave any mess on the carpet. Luke Haines loves mess on the carpet.

45. I shake hands with Luke Haines, founder of the united front against bullshit. "I have just written a pamphlet on the importance of being self-centred," he announces.

61. Luke Haines died in 1998 from a heart attack on live television. He was explaining how he had been the hero in his own life.

Thanks for the Link, I used to have After Murder Park but it got stolen along with a couple of other cds. I love unsolved child murder and had it stuck in my head for awhile. This is probably just me being greedy but is there anyway you could upload married to a lazy lover(I think this is what its called) from the same cd for me.

I'll Dl today. Looks awesome, thanks!

But, for the record, my favorite Luke Haines tune isn't on here -- "New French Girlfriend". But "Chinese Bakery" is a close second.

You could make a case for just about any song off the first three albums. It was my intention to only include 3 songs off any given album. I ended up not doing that with New Wave. I'd planned to include the orchestral versions of two songs off New Wave which appear on Das Capital but decided they weren't that appropriate for an intro mix but had already decided I wanted to include the songs so i just put the new wave versions on instead.

When I was writing a list of songs that I thought were definites prior to pulling the albums out, New French Girlfriend was one of the first three songs I came up. After relistening to it though the first time in a few years, I decided against it as the lyrics are very repetitive. I also ditched a bunch of other songs that I might have thought were among my favorites. I think that just speaks to how strong those first three albums are.

I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on the Luke Haines is Dead box set but it's $66 on amazon.

Based on how much i actaully listen to it, New Wave has to be a top 25 album of all time for me. I don't have any of his solo stuff of the Baader album. I hear the BBC session versions are fantastic on the box set.
