We Thought We'd Base Our Civilization Upon Yours

They don't need much of an introduction here I'm sure. I chose one track from each of their first 10 proper full lengths starting with White Music up through Nonsuch, and for the most part tried to stay away from the bigger singles (tracks 2, 6 and 8 being the exceptions). Actually, from what I understand, "Are You Receiving Me?" wasn't even on the original version of Go 2 released in the UK. There's nothing from Dukes, Rag n' Bone Buffet, Apple Venus, Wasp Star, Dub Experiments, etc. Not that those are "unessential". I contemplated leaving off the Big Express, Go 2, or Nonsuch tracks in favor of something from Apple Venus V1. Overall, I consider this a decent intro, but others may disagree. It's quite an assignment to condense an almost 30 year career of a highly prolific band into a ten song compilation, and not fail on some level. Technically, this only covers 14 or so years of the band's existence (someone else can cover the other "half" - I'm wiped). Also, check out mcaputo's Dukes mix if you haven't already.

RIYL: Their countless imitators; catchy upbeat new wave driven by the repetitious angular riff; experimental, and sometimes orchestral pop/rock; intelligent lyrics.

1. Into the Atomic Age
2. Are You Receiving Me?
3. Chain of Command
4. Burning with Optimism's Flames
5. Knuckle Down
6. Love on a Farmboy's Wages
7. Wake Up
8. Earn Enough For Us
9. Scarecrow People
10. Dear Madam Barnum

Matt Keating is in that same class of songwriter as Ron Sexsmith and Elliot Smith, but doesn't sound at all like either of them. His songs are elegant in structure and packed with wordplay that can amuse, dazzle, or hit way too close to home.

I'm not sure anyone really wants this one but i'm seeing him live soon and was listening to some of the old albums and decided to throw this together.

Pinebender

in my series of posts that maybe one person will download i give you pinebender out of chicago in the late 90's. tempos are slow, clean guitars match up with an wildly over-distorted baritone guitar that alternates between rhythm and lead. . . there's even a couple guitar solos (though fleet fingers are not the in the cards)

here's an excerpt from a website i found describing their first album:
. . . the studio's collection of analog equipment and microphones combined 6. with Mr. Albini's recording expertise captured the sound of the band 8/perfectly. Truly an amazing sounding recording. At times shimmering and beautiful, then quickly becoming powerful, almost menacing. TAATGW is ten tracks of ten-mile-wide distorted guitars and strong-armed, down-tempo drumming. The songs range from deceptive pop to epic, psychedelic slow burners

John Howard

RIYL: early Elton John, Harry Nilsson, Jon Brion piano ballads

AMG Wrote:
John Howard made an obscure British singer/songwriter album in the mid-'70s, Kid in a Big World, which like several efforts from that period showed the heavy influence of then newly emergent superstar Elton John. Howard was lower-key and more inclined toward eccentric story-songs, and not as gifted with a flair for chart hooks, though he too had a keyboard base to his arrangements and melodic ideas combining Beatles-Beach Boys pop with '70s singer/songwriting.

Howard first tried to enter the record business in the late '60s, when the classically trained pianist unsuccessfully sent in a tape of his songs to Apple Records for consideration. Changing his name from Howard Jones (though he was no relation to the '80s pop star Howard Jones) to John Howard, he actually turned down the chance to join a band that later become Iron Maiden. Instead, he worked on the college circuit and folk clubs, and got a management contract with Hurricane Smith's manager, Stuart Reid. He signed to CBS UK in late 1973, and recorded Kid in a Big World with ex-Shadows drummer Tony Meehan as producer and Argent's Bob Henrit and Rod Argent among the session men. Preceded by the late-1974 release of the "Goodbye Suzie" single, Kid in a Big World was released in February 1975, although it suffered from indifferent promotion and didn't make much of an impact. Although a second album was started, it never reached completion, in part because of intervention from CBS to try making it more commercial. The RPM label finally released the demos for that album in 2004 as Technicolour Biography. A year later, RPM issued another collection of demos, Can You Hear Me OK?, while the Bad Pressing label issued The Dangerous Hours, the first new album he had recorded in three decades. The wait would be much shorter for the next new album as As I Was Saying appeared before the end of 2005 on Cherry Red.

A classy but frustrating group that never put out a truly sterling album, though Flaunt The Imperfection came very close. Sometimes brilliant, sometimes limp, always immaculate in their clever synthpop, a tenner is right for them because most Obners would find the full releases a bit too Style Council. I always hoped they had another Flaunt in them but they never did.

RIYL: OMD as Steely Dan, Tears For Fears as Joe Jackson, General Public as XTC. Bryan Ferry as David Byrne doing casio demos for Talk Talk.

The Dogs

This probably won't be anyone's favorite tenner, but this band proved that France wasn't just standing by watching as the rest of the world exploded with punk and noo wave in the late 70s/early 80s. They progressed quite quickly, moving from the brittle punk of their debut and ending up at a place that was a commercially doomed mix of punk, pop, glam, and a 50s sock hop. Singer Dominique Laboubée died in 2002.

Sonic Youth: Duex

Sonic Youth has been so much to music since the early 80s, starting off as brash noise rockers, then evolving into grungy forefathers, then refined noise rockers, then mellow tunes crafters... while never sounding like compromisers or like they're retreading anything. They know how to stay true to themselves and damn the rest. The result is a catalog of over 300 songs, which are impossibly tough to pare down to a mere tenner. I saw them live once in my life, and it is one of the highlights of my life. Even though they were supporting Rather Ripped, their weakest album since the late 80s, they brought the rock and melded the songs into a fantastic live setting.

This tenner is meant as a supplement to konstantl's mix... When it become time to make some painful cuts, I made some selections based on how well represented his mix was. But really, this should have been a twentier or a thirtier to really do the band justice.

01. Trilogy: b) Hyperstation (Daydream Nation)
02. Hoarfrost (A Thousand Leaves)
03. Sugar Kane (Dirty)
04. NYC Ghosts & Flowers (NYC Ghosts & Flowers)
05. Androgynous Mind (Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star)
06. Secret Girls (EVOL)
07. Disappear (Goo)
08. Steamxsonik Subway (NYC Ghosts & Flowers)
09. Wish Fulfillment (Dirty)
10. Little Trouble Girl (Washing Machine)

...I had forgotten how awesome A Thousand Leaves and Dirty were. And how weak Goo is. And if I could have included every track from NYC Ghosts & Flowers I would have. If I had some throw-away space I'd have enjoyed including some of the noise stuff... but space too precious for that. Which is why I went with Hyperstation instead of Teen Age Riot from Daydream Nation. Also would have enjoyed including some stuff from Murray Street through Rather Ripped... but between konstantl covering that era well and space issues, they got neglected.

Man… or Astro-man?

Maybe a novelty band, maybe a one-trick pony, but that one thing they did, they did really, really well. Incredibly fun band, live and on record. This mix showcases their most "typical" sound, the only major detour being a "song" played entirely on a dot matrix printer. I wanted to include one of their tracks with vocals (like the MST3K theme), but ultimately I didn't feel like any of them were as good as these. Download this mix. It's only 24 minutes long.

RIYL: surf guitar, b-movie samples, awesomeness

2. "A Mouthful of Exhaust" (Destroy All Astro-Men - 1994)

My favorite Bowie tracks change from year to year. For years I liked the Ziggy stuff best, then the melodrama stuff, then the ambient. Now it's more the cacophonous and menacing.

Spot the Davey above.

NRBQ

AMG Wrote:
NRBQ (the New Rhythm and Blues Quartet) have amassed a fanatical cult following over more than two decades of recording and touring with their incredibly versatile eclecticism; their music might veer from country to rockabilly to pop to bar-band R&B to blues to free jazz, all in the same album. The group's wacky, sometimes corny sense of humor and in-concert unpredictability (the band sometimes vows to play whatever song audience members request) have endeared them to fans, even if some find them a bit precious. The band was formed in Miami in 1967 by keyboardist Terry Adams, guitarist Steve Ferguson (both former members of the Louisville, Kentucky band Mersey Beats USA), singer Frank Gadler, drummer Tom Staley, and bassist/singer Joey Spampinato. After moving to New Jersey and playing clubs, NRBQ attracted immediate attention with their wide-ranging musicianship and were signed to Columbia. On their 1969 self-titled debut, the band covered rockabilly and Sun Ra on one record and pulled it off; not surprisingly, rave reviews followed. NRBQ followed it with Boppin' the Blues, a collaboration with rockabilly singer Carl Perkins; it too received critical praise, but Columbia was unhappy with the group's sales and dropped it. Ferguson left the group and was replaced by former Wildweeds guitarist Al Anderson; Gadler left in 1972, and in 1974, drummer Tom Ardolino replaced Staley. This lineup carried on through 1994, recording albums for labels including Kama Sutra, Rounder, and Mercury (At Yankee Stadium), as well as their own Red Rooster. NRBQ and its members have worked with Skeeter Davis (1985's She Sings, They Play), John Sebastian, jazz artist Carla Bley, and even unofficial manager and wrestling star Captain Lou Albano, who appeared on 1986's Lou and the Q. Joey Spampinato appeared in the Chuck Berry film Hail! Hail! Rock and Roll as a member of the backing band. In 1989, the band got another one-album major-label deal with Virgin, which resulted in Wild Weekend, their first album to make the charts since the debut record. Al Anderson joined a Nashville publishing house in 1991 and had songs recorded by several major country artists, including Alabama, Carlene Carter, and Ricky Van Shelton. After recording Message for the Mess Age, the group's 1994 album for Forward Records, Anderson left NRBQ for a solo career. He was replaced months later by Spampinato's brother Johnny. After a handful of live efforts including 1997's Tokyo: Recorded Live at on Air West Tokyo and 1998's You Gotta Be Loose: Recorded Live in U.S.A., the group resurfaced in 1999 with a self-titled studio release.

Another tough one. So many more good songs but I decided to go with the jaunty & jangly instead of the ambient & broody.

Aside from "Long Cool Woman..." I tried to avoid the big hits (at least the ones that were big in the US). Everything came from the "30th Anniversary Collection" 3-disc set. Something well-worth owning.

1. Now's the Time
2. Here I Go Again
3. We're Through
4. Look Through Any Window
5. Stop Stop Stop
6. Kill Me Quick
7. Like Everytime Before
8. Listen To Me
9. Sorry Suzanne
10. Long Cool Woman In a Black Dress

RIYL: Um, The Hollies...

Mott the Hoople

I've previously done a whole MtH mix in the rparis dumb idea thread, so this one's a little different: a tenner of Mott using only live versions, pieced together from the 30th Anniversary Mott Live reissue (and pulled mostly from the phenomenal Hammersmith sides, which featured guests Mick Jagger and David Bowie). Listening to this now, it's hard to place into context - the year was 1974, glam was ending, punk was already on the horizon, and you can hear the collison of both not only in the constant powerchord attack of the band, but in the way Hunter rips a new asshole into Don MacLean's "American Pie" or stops "Sweet Angeline" to call out for a few London slags. Hell, I even hear some proto-Eddie Van Halen in Ariel Bender's amelodic leads. And people wondered why they weren't more popular. Anyway, it's only nominally a tenner, because the band favored veering off into other songs when playing live. Ah, the lost art of the "medley"...

1. American Pie/ The Golden Age of Rock and Roll
2. Roll Away the Stone/ Sweet Jane
3. All the Way From Memphis
4. Sweet Angeline
5. All The Young Dudes
6. Jerkin' Crocus/ One of the Boys/ Rock 'n' Roll Queen/ Get Back/ Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On/ Violence
7. Walkin' With A Mountain

RIYL: teh massive rock

and PS: I should also mention that I'm usually not a fan of live albums, but this one is pretty amazing. Pristine sound and a band at the top of their form.

Pinback

This one was particularly difficult for me, so instead of limiting it to my all-time favorites which stick mainly to blue screen life and the s/t one, I chose to try and give some favorites from the main albums that I know of which includes Blue Screen Life, S/T, Summer in Abbadon, and Autumn of the Seraphs. The latter of which is probably UNDER-represented since I am not that familiar with it and feel like it may have better songs on there than the ones I remember being my favorites (been a while since I listened to it). After choosing songs for this tenner, I feel like I am probably gonna go on a Pinback relapse. It's been a while since we shared a moment...

1. Prog
2. Non Photo-Blue
3. Loro (probably my favorite track)
4. Fortress
5. Devil You Know
6. Montaigne
7. X I Y
8. Hurley
9. Seville
10. Off By 50

Muse

I imagine Muse isn't new to anyone here. Most of you all probably listen to and like this band already, or at least have heard enough to make up your mind that you don't like them. Just trying to make a tenner for them made me realize just how much this band kicks my ass. I decided to just take two from each of the four albums I have for the first 8 tracks and then just randomly select two other favorites to round out the tenner. I figure this will be a nice little mix of songs for some to see why I like Muse.

Frog Holler

01. Adams Hotel Road
02. Pennsylvania
03. Couldn't Get Along
04. Spiders and Planes
05. You're Leavin' Soon
06. Least Most Wanted
07. Knee High in July
08. Virginia
09. Idiots
10. The Sweetest Sound

RIYL : Excellent songs from the Pennsylvania Dutch Country that captures the essence of The Band, John Prine and bluegrass.

What you notice after spending some time with this band is that the simple nature of the melodies, vocals and musicianship belies some real thought and creativity.
