Mouse on Mars

Mouse on Mars is maybe the greatest "electronic" group ever (sorry Kraftwerk). Their music is fun and often danceable, but it doesn't conform to the rigid repetitive structures of most electronic dance music. They also handle slow, prettier numbers masterfully. They aren't what I'd consider ambient music, but a lot of their stuff can be pleasant in the background or calming and meditative. They can also be fierce and abrasive, like on their most recent album. There's a dubby reggae influence in most of their music from the '90s, and this decade has shown them exploring all sorts of unique and interesting areas. Since adding their drummer in 2001, they perform like a band and put on one the most fun shows I've ever been to.

This mix kicks off with a collaboration with Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab (kinda linking it with my previous mix) on a slower, kind of dreamy song. Then on "Tamagnocchi" they get in a Krautrock groove which now sounds to me a lot like what Fujiya & Miyagi did nearly 10 years later. "Yippie" is ska on some kind of speed/mushroom combo, somehwat familiar sounds played on unidentifiable "instruments", a signature of Mouse on Mars. "Gocard" is the oldest and possibly best track on this mix, beautifully warm and showcasing their reggae influence. I don't know if the bass on this mp3 of "Shamp Hare Rama" is quite as deep and powerful as it is on the vinyl EP I have, but it's still a really fun track. "Untitled States Of" is probably my favorite they've done this decade, really perfecting their take on dance music with a great melody and their usual rich textures. The next two tracks don't have my full endorsement quite like the rest of this mix, but they provide a sampling of their most recent work. "Wipe that Sound" is their most conventional attempt at pop (but still pretty weird), and Düül is probably the heaviest, noisiest track they've ever recorded. (Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma did supposedly meet at a death metal concert, after all.) "Catching Butterflies with Hands" is one of their more psychedelic compositions, and closing out the mix is another strongly reggae/dub-influenced track, this one deeper and more immersive.

1. "Cache Coeur Naif" (Cache Coeur Naif EP - 1997)
2. "Tamagnocchi" (Autoditacker - 1997)
3. "Yippie" (Niun Niggung - 1999)
4. "Gocard" (Iaora Tahiti - 1995)
5. "Shamp Hare Rama" (Pickly Dred Rhizzoms EP - 1999)
6. "Untitled States Of" (Agit Itter It It EP - 2002)
7. "Wipe That Sound" (Radical Connector - 2004)
8. "Düül" (Varcharz - 2006)
9. "Catching Butterflies with Hands" (Idiology - 2001)
10. "Rompatroullie" (Instrumentals - 1997)

Thought I'd contribute to this mix project, hope someone likes these selections. I tried to stay away from the more popular tunes that most people were familiar with but also attempted to make an adequate cross section of the band throughout the years, cherry picking my absolute favorites.

This one was surprisingly hard to do. Ended up picking a couple songs each from most of their albums. I left off anything from Hi Fi Way, and cut a bunch of stuff I really like.

Pagliaro

This is a guy with a string of hits from the 70s - but they're the sort of songs where you'll go "oh shit, he sang THAT?" One of the greatest sheer hitmakers of that decade, and someone who really deserves a much wider audience (or, at least, a single album in CD format or even still in print).

1. Lovin' You Ain't Easy
2. Some Sing, Some Dance
3. What The Hell I Got
4. Louise

Faust is/was a Krautrock band, one of the weirder ones. Maybe the weirdest one. I don't feel like writing much tonight so here:

Bill Fay

I'm lazy and looked for a description of Fay online to steal but cuoldn't find one i liked. Fay was an avant garde british folkie, singer-songwriter and pianist in the late 60's/early 70's with a cult following. His work is folk for lack of a better descriptor but it really defys categorization. His self-titled debut featured a 27 piece orchestra, while his follow-up, "Time of the Last Persecution" was much rawer and at times had much harder electric guitar than would typically be found in folk music. Both albums were recorded in a single day. He would later release a third album, "Tomorrow Tomorrow Tomorrow," which I only recently purchased and am still digesting. I opted not to include anything from the third album which doesn't seem nearly as strong at first listen. I did include two tracks from his demos and extras collection, "From the Bottom of an Old Grandfather Clock."

These albums were all reissued a few years ago and got tremendous reviews, especially from the british press who compared him to Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Ray Davies and Nick Drake among others. For me, the best comparison would be a more avant garde and experimental Lennon. I hear similarities in the lilt of his voice and also in his melodic structures but that's probably where any comparison begins and ends. Even though I was only pulling from 3 albums, it was really hard to get this down to 10 songs. Those albums are really great. Get them if you find you like this.

Not that it should matter but Jim O'Rourke and Jeff Tweedy are big fans and Tweedy apparently has covered "Be Not So Fearful."

1. Laughing Man (Time of the Last Persecution)
2. Garden Song (Bill Fay)
3. Be Not So Fearful (Bill Fay)
4. The Room (Bill Fay)
5. Screams in the Ear (Bill Fay)

7. Omega Day (Time of the Last Persecution)
8. Time of The Last Persecution (Time of The Last Persecution)
9. Warwick Town (From the Bottom of an Grandfather Clock)

This could have had a number of configurations since Roddy Frame has so many others songs I like equally well. For those not familiar, it's exquisite Scot jangle pop that skirts both schmaltz and extreme brooding but doesn't fall prey to either. Songwriting, class and guitar chops consistent throughout a career that's had Frame written off as a former wunderkind who peaked with his first album though he kept on releasing top quality sophistipop that just wasn't as edgy as some people wanted. One of my favorite dudes, anyway.[

Engine (Jeff Mangum, Live at Jittery Joe's)
King Of Carrot Flowers Parts 2 & 3 (In the Aeroplane Over the Sea)
2-Headed Boy (In the Aeroplane Over the Sea)
Holland, 1945 (In the Aeroplane Over the Sea)
Where You'll Find Me Now (On Avery Island)
Gardenhead/Leave Me Alone (On Avery Island)
Ghost (In the Aeroplane Over the Sea)
Now I'm Going Down (Shannon's Monroe House Demos)

I added a couple of rare and live tracks, just to make it a little interesting for those on the board who are already fans. Plus, they only had 2 official albums, anyway!
