Bill Fay
I'm lazy and looked for a description of Fay online to steal but cuoldn't find one i liked. Fay was an avant garde british folkie, singer-songwriter and pianist in the late 60's/early 70's with a cult following. His work is folk for lack of a better descriptor but it really defys categorization. His self-titled debut featured a 27 piece orchestra, while his follow-up, "Time of the Last Persecution" was much rawer and at times had much harder electric guitar than would typically be found in folk music. Both albums were recorded in a single day. He would later release a third album, "Tomorrow Tomorrow Tomorrow," which I only recently purchased and am still digesting. I opted not to include anything from the third album which doesn't seem nearly as strong at first listen. I did include two tracks from his demos and extras collection, "From the Bottom of an Old Grandfather Clock."
These albums were all reissued a few years ago and got tremendous reviews, especially from the british press who compared him to Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Ray Davies and Nick Drake among others. For me, the best comparison would be a more avant garde and experimental Lennon. I hear similarities in the lilt of his voice and also in his melodic structures but that's probably where any comparison begins and ends. Even though I was only pulling from 3 albums, it was really hard to get this down to 10 songs. Those albums are really great. Get them if you find you like this.
Not that it should matter but Jim O'Rourke and Jeff Tweedy are big fans and Tweedy apparently has covered "Be Not So Fearful."
