They had many other excellent songs. I purposefully left off "Wide Open Road" and "Bury Me Deep In Love" since those are the best-known songs.
Apparently there's a large amount of early cassette material that might be worth hearing, too. Don't have that.

Chris Ardoin

AMG Wrote:
A third generation product of the southwestern Louisiana region's most famed musical dynasty, nouveau zydeco accordionist Chris Ardoin followed in the traditions established by his father, French Zydeco Band frontman Lawrence "Black" Ardoin; his grandfather, Cajun "la la" legend Alphonse "Bois Sec" Ardoin; and his distant cousin, Creole virtuoso Amadé Ardoin. Born in 1981, Chris made his public debut at the age of four, playing with his father at a Texas gumbo cook-off; just five years later, he backed his grandfather during an appearance at Carnegie Hall. The child prodigy also soon joined his father's new band Lagniappe as a full-time member, but like Lawrence before him, Ardoin eventually rejected the confines of traditional zydeco to pursue his own muse; with his older brother Sean, cousin Alphonse and family friend Peter Jacobs, he formed the band Double Clutchin', the name representative of the kind of repeated bass drum kicks which define the funky "new zydeco" sound. Double Clutchin' debuted with 1994's That's Da Lick, recorded when bandleader Ardoin was just 13; Lick It Up! followed a year later, and in 1997 the group signed to Rounder for Gon' Be Jus' ine. Turn the Page followed in 1998 and Best Kept Secrets arrived two years later.

Syl Johnson

AMG Wrote:
A rollicking vocalist and gifted harmonica player, Syl Johnson has forged a career in both blues and soul. The brother of bassist Mac Thompson and guitarist/vocalist Jimmy Johnson, Syl Johnson sang and played with blues artists Magic Sam, Billy Boy Arnold, and Junior Wells in the '50s before recording with Jimmy Reed for Vee-Jay in 1959. He made his solo debut that same year with Federal. Johnson toured with Howlin' Wolf from late 1959 until 1962, when Willie Mitchell signed him to Hi Records. Johnson recorded for both Twilight and Hi in the late '60s and early '70s, clicking with the dance/novelty cut "Come on Sock It to Me" and crackling message track "Is It Because I'm Black?" He had his biggest hit with "Take Me to the River" in 1975, reaching number seven on the R&B charts. Johnson later recorded for Shama and Boardwalk.

The Pogues and TMTCH came from the same background. TMTCH are not as rough-and-ready, being more like Spider than Shane but damn if they don't have some fine, fine songs and wisdom-through-failures beauty in both word and sound.

Lee "Scratch" Perry ( and sometimes with the Upsetters)

Some of these will have the definite Dub ambient knobbing while some are straight forward skanking(with the Upsetters). The lead in banter is hilarious. This is about as accessible as Dub gets for an intro before getting into the Sticky realm.

Steve Reich

I remember randomly stumbling upon The Desert Music and Different Trains/Electric Counterpoint at a used music store. They were filed under contemporary/pop and I was intrigued by the cover. Listened to the first few minutes of The Desert Music and fell in love. Have since acquired a number of his albums, and now giggle at the used music store that filed him under pop instead of classical. Minimalism, phasing, and counterpointing.

(He's the one in the black cap... probably partaking in a performance of his composition Drumming)

01. First Movement (Fast) (The Desert Music)
02. Come Out (Early Works)
03. America - Before the War (Different Trains/Electric Counterpoint)
04. You Are What Your Thoughts Are (You Are (Variations))
05. Percussion (The Four Sections)
06: Section 11 (Music for 18 Musicians)
07. Octet (Another Look At Counterpoint)
08. Electric Counterpoint (Different Trains/Electric Counterpoint)
09. Third Movement (Triple Quartet)
10. After the War (Different Trains/Electric Counterpoint)

Just to note, I have two other CDs from him that are not represented here, largely because they are only a few movements, of ~20-25 minutes each. It doesn't make sense to put half of an album on a mix, like I'd be doing with Drumming or Tehilum.

Also, uploaded via Rapidshare, since the zipped file still exceeded Mediafire's size limit of 100MB.

Vulgar Boatmen

There's a bit of innocence to this group. They come out of Illinois/Indy area and only have 2 albums I am aware of. They have some imports I can't find with one particular song that would be a great addition. It's simple plains rock well crafted. Its not slick more like living room recorded. Christgau wrote somewhat praisingly "if not sweet tunes, then sharp lines or even driving grooves. . . so cannily generalized they make the polite romantic disconnections of academia stand in for those of all white middle-class America." Yeah, its simple sweet, melodic, innocent . . . maybe blah enough to enjoy!

Iggy

Probably unnecessary, though requested. This one could've gone a hundred different ways, but I finally settled on just throwing on the stuff I like best, which includes the admittedly overplayed "Lust for Life". Mostly it's from the albums New Values, Kill City, Party, Soldier, and Lust for Life - nothing from his later albums (although I kind of like Brick by Brick). Oh, and "African Man" is included almost exclusively for LooGAR.

1. Lust for Life
2. Sweet Sixteen

Judging from just their handfuls of hits and the best-of The Proclaimers seem the ever-sweet Everly Brothers-with-a-burr.
But I wanted to show they're crankier than that.
Also, the acoustic version of "Letter From America" is so much better than the pop version, imo.
