Whats with the obscure references and random shit in mix cd titles? To make them more "artistically interesting" or is it just part of the typical indie snob/hipster platform?

call a whatever a whatever whydontcha?

also, list some good mix cd titles that you just came up with

1) Oprah Doesn't Like This
2) Countdown To Epiphany
3) Here Are The Keys To Failure

i name my mixtapes with either the date, a theme, or an outstanding lyric on an opening or closing song. i've never understood totally bizarre titles.

I think that references to quotes or books or poems are faaaaaaaaaaar better than generic mix names. I'd rather quote some random poet or book than call a mix "Fall Mix '04." Could just be me, though.

Exactly, mfd. Sometimes I'll use an obscure lyric off of one of the songs on the mix, but more often than not, I use a quote/line from a book or poem.

Not trying to be a hipster or snobbish...

Various mix-naming strategies:
- Incorporating name/userhandle of the recipient (Gin No Chaser; Thorn In My Backside; 100% Cotton)
- Taking it from the a lyric on the first track (Follow The Light... The Light Is Your Guide)
- Inside jokes (Just the Four Of Us: Songs For A Fellow Gemini)

though my year end discs are always "2003: A Retrospective" or whatever year it is

i used to make a lot of mixes especially for this one paricular female friend of mine; some had names, some dates, ya know?

Crazy story, i honestly made a mix with a date title 9/10/01; never sent it out, never even really listened too it. My thinking changed so much from that night that i made it (9/10) to what happened the next day; it just didnt seem fitting, or whatever.

Weird weird WEIRD postscript: had Jesus Etc. on that mix cuz i had recently gotten that interboot copy of YHF.

What?

Oprah Doesn't Like This isn't creative????? also, what's so creative about plucking out a song lyric for a title?

most of my mixes are for myself, tapes i listen to in the car. i label tapes with the date and then can usually remember what's on it after a few rotations. that has as much to do with organization as functionality.

mixes for other people are a whole different story, but i've never felt the need to put much effort into the naming. and nobody's ever complained. i sometimes see totally obscure titles on artofthemix.org and think, 'what's the point?' but whatever, that's just where i'm coming from. i don't see much importance in it.

Bort's definitely more creative than me; he's just not an indie snob.
