The Guild League "If Not Now.."

from my second-favorite album of the year so far. No longer just a Lucksmiths side project.

The Phantom Band - "Throwing Bones"

Glascow act. Tune has touchstones to The Doors, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Beach Boys, Super Furry Animals, several Manchester bands and has the shimmer of indiepop but the groove of classic rock.

Song was a single two years ago but is on the new album and worth pointing out again.

Nicolas Jaar - "John The Revelator"

self-released track by 18-year old Brown University student. Mixes ambient, dubstep, middle eastern, negro spiritual. Be interesting to see what he does if he gets signed. He calls his stuff organic electronic.

The DoneFors - "Red Fish"

Toronto indie folkpop group, with blues and jazz tones. New album How To Have Sex With Canadians. This is a pre-album mix of the song where the bass is mixed louder than on the album. It's a little slinkier.

Still Flyin' - "Aerosmith, Take Me To The Other Side"

Flouncy Vampire Weekend-y indiepop that's all cotton candy but still manages to sprinkle out some Warren Zevon and New Order texture.

Jeffrey Lewis & The News with Laura Marling - "Brain Damage"

Eminem cover done up nerd folk on Guardian podcast. Both awful and great: awful because it's painfully dweeby, great because it presents the lyric's childhood bullying theme without the swagger so you feel little Marshall Bruce wasn't quite as tough as his superstar alter ego.

Here's the video: ttp://www.guardian.co.uk/music/video/20 ... ra-marling

Lemonheads - "Layin' Up With Linda"

Altcountry treatment of the G.G. Allin killed-my-girlfriend song. From Lemonheads Varshons covers album. Ol' Hippie Grinner drops the sunshine and is in low register for this one, and it works.
