Throughout his career, Hayden has specialized in acoustic intimacy. And while he's very good at it, the promise of so much more has always been right there lurking beneath the surface. With Elk-Lake Serenade, Hayden finally showcases the full range of his abilities by expanding his sound above and beyond the brooding comfort zone he's been content to occupy on previous albums, in favor of pacing and instrumentation never before heard in his work.

If the steady driving "Home by Saturday" provides the first hint that perhaps Hayden has decided to try and break out of his shell, the vibrant "Hollywood Ending" and brash "My Wife" are the sounds of that shell being shattered to bits. This is not to say Hayden has completely abandoned what he does best. "Don't Get Down," a simultaneously inspirational and bittersweet ballad, is his best song to date, and Elk-Lake Serenade is his best album. In fact, it's the best album of the year.

Bob,

I picked this up used mainly on your recommendation here but I can't stand his singing. Do you like it?

Honestly, I want to know.

I think it's pretty safe for you to assume FT does indeed like Hayden's voice.

I think I want to hear from Bob and his explanation of it, not yours on this subject. Thanks.

Normally, I think I have a pretty high tolerance to quirky or unusual sounding vocals but this album just left me shaking my head. I mean, I have a high regard for Bob's musical tastes and recommendations but this was one album I just couldn't swallow.

Puzzling.

Here's an explanation for you: FT and you have different tastes.

Seriously, what do you want FT to explain? Explaining why he likes someone's voice will be as futile as your non-existent attempt to explain why you don't.

Actually over the years I've noticed that we don't, that's why I'm bringing this up. Duh.

Here's proof:

Doves - Some Cities: liked
Josh Rouse - Nashville: really liked
Robbers On High Street - Tree City: Spoon-imitators but still good in my book
Low - Destroyer: love it
Kings Of Leon - Aha Shake Heartbreak: mostly good
Jim White - Drill a Hole... excellent
John Vanderslice - Cellar Door: very good
Eagles Of Death Metal - Peace, Love, Death Metal: it rocks
Sondre Lerche - Two-Way Monologue: nice
The Futureheads - s/t: mostly good
Ted Leo - Shake The Sheets: liked it
FF - s/t: loved it
Neko Case - The Tigers Have Spoken: didn't hear this yet.
Sunset Valley - Goldbank 78 Special: also unheard but his description sounds like I'd like it
Mark Knofler - Shangri-La: haven't heard it yet either but I like his stuff in Dire Straits pretty much

Stuff he liked but I didn't:

The Libertines - s/t: nope, though I can see how others would dig this.

To me, that's a pretty good indicator that we have similiar tastes.
