I'm thinking specifically along the lines of:

Lloyd Cole - '(Are You) Ready To Be Heartbroken?'
Camera Obscura - 'Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken'

Scott McKenzie - 'If You're Going To San Francisco'
The Magnetic Fields - 'Come Back From San Francisco'

Paul McCartney - 'Too Many People'
John Lennon - 'How Do You Sleep?'
