Have you ever gone to a center for the treatment of sleep disorders? It has become painfully obvious that I never sleep well. I have no trouble falling asleep, but I wake up several times throughout the night for no apparent reason. It's getting harder to stay focused at work, and I'm cranky on this board and elsewhere. I'm currently investigating a few Chicagoland centers. What was your experience, if any? Did it help?

Sounds like a classic case of obstructive sleep apnea. I think a sleep study is in your future.

No, but I am still searching for my dream job as mattress tester, or better yet a guinea pig for a study about the muscle atrophy when bed ridden for extended periods.

Aggggghhhh.....

My thoughts exactly. It'll be nice to not be so pissy/snarky all the time. I feel like I'm turning into the Hipinion board.

It's probably worth consulting a doctor about. It may be apnea, but often people suffering from this are not 'aware' of the awakenings during the night, they are often called 'micro-awakenings' where the patient basically wakes up after they stop breathing for a couple of seconds and then falls back into non-REM. This may happen hundreds of times during the night. If you're just 'waking up' after sleep, then it doesn't really sound like this, but who knows,
there are lots of different things that may be going on, a good ol' EEG will do the trick.

When I read this I got the image of MC Hammer as Wilt Chamberlain on SNL in my head.

Thanks for the input. I had planned to make an appointment, and hope to do so tomorrow. You don't really realize how amazing a good night of sleep is until it's taken away.

My wife has done this and been diagnosed with sleep apnea. She uses a CPAP at night. She no longer snores and sleeps more restfully. Not as tired during the day. This is what the damn thing looks like:

Pretty sexy, huh? Yeah, it's a real turn on. Anyway, it looks as if it would be impossible to sleep with this thing on your face, but you actually do get used to it.

Go to the sleep lab and see what they say.

Steve

I had my first appointment with a sleep clinic last week. The next time I go in is for an overnight sleep test. I have the problem of not being able to stay awake in class or meetings so finally decided to do something about it.

my dad has been to one of these. he said the only problem with the one he went to is that they wake you up at 6 to take off the equipment, but then you can go back to sleep while they calculate the results. i should've gone because i am a terrible sleeper (falling asleep, staying asleep, restlessness, etc), but couldn't deal with being woken up so early because that's usually when i'm hitting serious rem.

Diggin' up an old thread here...

I went through an overnight + following day sleep study. It was hell but I'm glad I did it. 8 electrodes on my face, 5 on my head, one behind each ear, a mic on my throat, 2 on my chest, and 2 on my legs for the overnight. Given that I managed to sleep anyway. The following day test was to determine narcolepsy. I had to take a 20 minute nap every 2 hours for a total of 5. By the end of the day I was cranky, that's for sure, especially given it was a sunny day in Seattle. I fell asleep in an average of 5 minutes for all 5 naps and hit REM in 4 of them so I've got the narcolepsy as I found out yesterday. The nurse nurse practitioner was shocked by my complacency when she told me but it wasn't really a surprise. After more than 10 years of napping through class and meetings I'm finally gonna be awake thanks to my new little helper Provigil...
