Not the end of the world, but Verizon changed its voicemail so that now, before hearing any message I hear this:

"You have X unheard messages. The Following messages have not been heard. First unheard message:"

OK. I Don't need to be told THREE TIMES THAT THESE MESSAGES HAVE NOT BEEN HEARD!! Jesus this annoys me.

t-mobile tinkered with theirs a month or so ago so that it repeats, slowly, many tedious bits of information like that. They have ensured that there is a near-zero likelihood of hearing one message in a call that takes less than one minute. Death to Capitalism!

Minor annoyance that actually bugs the crap out of me:

Having to sign in to gmail, EVERY FUCKING TWO WEEKS.

Who has that kinda time or memory for passwords?

90% of that crap is very, very tinkerable if you wait till the end and go through the options. I have VZ, and mine can be turned on/off. Try it.

Sorry Cap'n (as I know that you are Verixon's biggest cheerleader) but Verizon sucks compared to Nextel in terms of voice mail (like being able to hit 7 in the middle of a voice mail instead of having to listen to the whole damn thing first) and convenience of phones! My phone may be tiny, but it sucks, and I miss direct connect. What I don't miss is the bill, though. Nextel is overpriced for sure.

Also, my Nextel got out fine at Redlands---with Verizon its hit or miss, so much for the nations biggest network, eh?

My Verizon account has always said that.

I have Verizon and I can delete mid-message by hitting 7.

Well fuck you then punk.

It must be a phone to phone thing. I have the ghetto LG; a fucking total stepdown from my Nextel Motorola---a brick for sure, but could do anything.

I, too, can hit 7 mid-message and delete.

You live in the sticks, Bloor. Count your blessings that it works at all. Leave the house sometimes and visit people. One patchy service record in the boonies does not a bad network make.

I live in metro atlanta, closer to the city than most of the poulation who live in cobb or gwinnett. AT&T and Nextel work fine at my house. Verizon just happens to have a tower gap on this side of hwy 74. because their coverage is fine everywhere else. I ain't mad at 'em, I just want better coverage at Redlands.

Not too far from there, out in sharpsburg (HultLand), nothing BUT VZ works. It's kooky.

Nextell and motorola have a dealy, where only moto makes handsets for them. And they're expected to be "beefier" than normal for contractor folk. Nextell also has the highest revenue per user in the industry, thanks to their amazingly high prices.

I would annoy so many more people if I had cell service at my house.

Verizon could charge me more if they didn't have the jankiest phone selection on the planet. Look, I'm a young up and comin pimp, I need a fly phone...but all I have is LG..GARBAGE!

There is, at this stage of the game, always a tradeoff. Sucks. Go with cingular and get flashy phones but GAR service, go with Sprint and get nothing but GAR, go with VZ and get last year's phones but a good network.

Europe did this right. They said, at the get-go, we're gonna have 1 technology throughout the land, capitolism be damned. But they were right... 1 handset works, potentially, in every major country. Sooo, the important part is that handset makers (Nokia, et al) only have to worry about one transmission standard, and can focus on the cool stuff like overall design etc. Thus, cool handsets. Turns out here in the good ol US of A that the biggest carrier went with something different, so more users (till cingular bought at+t, now neck-and-neck) use a different, non-european format. Thus, no handset sharing between Sprint / Verizon / US Cell and Europe / Cingular.

Apologies for nerdery.

What's wrong with LG's? I just got one and it seems fine to me.

I switched from Cingular to T-Mobile about 6 months ago, and am actually pretty happy with it. The only billing problem I had was corrected promptly, and there seemed to be a decent selection of phones when I signed up. I have a nifty little motorola phone. I haven't lost service for any extended amount of time, only maybe when travelling through some serious boonies, and also sometimes in WalMart (did this with the old phone though too; always went to roaming once I stepped inside the store). Also, I signed up for some one-month-free promotion of this service that plays music for the people who are calling you instead of it just ringing in their ear; after the month was over I cancelled it 'cause I didn't want to pay extra, but they never turned it off, so if you were to call me, instead of a ring you'll hear "I Put a Spell on You". And I'm still not paying for it.
