I've been on the cheap kick for the last 5 years w/ headphones. Anything that covers the whole ear usually sounds good enough to make me happy, as long as it's not for recording. The last 2 pair have been Koss, and didn't cost but about $20 each. I think the last pair even floded up, which helped. I generally get at least 2 or 3 years out of them, and the price is great.

For recording or for "fine listening," yes, one should probably shell out. And then one should keep them away from animals like Hershgul.

Anyone know if these Shure headphones are good?

I haven't heard anything positive or negative about the shures (I would imagine them to be pretty qual); I have heard really good things about the Etymotics though.

I want some of one of those as well Shiv. Keep me posted if you pick up a pair.

And you can't resplice the wires on expensive studio headphones like the ones Busty and I had and like I'm sure Polly did. It just don't work.

God, i fucking miss those heaadphones.

If memory serves, I think the general opinion is that the Etys have a much more precise sound and can be very unforgiving, whereas the Shures are a little more suited for rock music, including a better bass punch.

I was looking into buying the Shure e3c a while back, but had to throw the cash elsewhere.

Bloor, I have some Sennheiser HD280s with a replaceable cord. I think I paid around $65 on Amazon a while back.
