There has been a lot of interest 'round these parts in the mysterious production of eggs -- what do you guys think of his older stuff? I'm not familiar with anything other than the new one.

I own two other records by Andrew Bird, Weather Systems which is about as good as Mysterious Production of Eggs (Very Good) & Thw Swimming Hour which is mind blowingly awesome.

I don't have his first album but have all the others. I'll probably be in the minority here but its my opinion that Mysterious Production of Eggs is by far THE WORST and LEAST interesting thing he's ever done. Not that I hate it or anything but its a big disappointment to me after highly anticipating it. What I dislike about it -- its greater focus on the guitar rather than violin and more straightforward pop sound -- will probably make many others here like it more.

Either way, I highly recommend both the swimming hour and weather systems and there really isn't a dud in his catalog.

I'm glad to hear that you guys think his previous works are >= mpoe; I had somehow picked up the notion that this is by far his best work. Now I can't wait to explore his catalog. :)

As for another singer / songwriter, josh rouse, I've been loving nashville, so I got 1972 and under cold blue stars, but have been meh on both.

Weather Systems-Mysterious Production of Eggs-Swimming Hour-Thrills-Oh, the Grandeur

I think that the second release is just plain horrible. He was still in this weird pubescent zone coming out of the "auxiliary role" he played in the SNZ.I think that Thrills is interesting, but Oh, the Grandeur is just plain boring.

I too was disappointed in the lack of focus on the violin and more on the guitar. However, the lyrics are great in MPOE. "Oh there will be snacks there will...". haha

But Swimming Hour is a close close second to MPOE. However, I think that Swimming Hour and Weather Systems are very comparable in sound and style whereas MPOE is moving in a different direction.

done.

i don't get why you guys like this guy so much. weather systems and the new one annoy me. it's not like you can listen to these albums over and over again. seems to be more like novelty music to me then anything else.

I do listen to them(the albums) over and over again. I guess we'll have to leave this one at subjectivity. Bro.

I listened Weather Sysyesms many, many times when I got it (last year), but it took me a little time to warm up to The Mysterious Production of Eggs for some reason. Now it will easily make my year end list.

Those are the only two Andrew Bird discs I own, though.

My favorite album of his is The Swimming Hour, which is technically by Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire. Love the new one, but wasn't crazy about Weather Systems.

I only own Swimming Hour, which I love. He's great live too, can't wait to see him when he hits Nashville on MAY 29.
