I have been professing my love for I Love Music lately and this is just one of those reasons. Since people here love NMH and might have a decent question for him I decided to link it.

there's details i'd never print that any pitchforker would be dying to let the world know, out of a simple desire to see him not stalked by little indie-loons anymore. so that's partly why i ask for help -- it can be hard to have perspective when you feel so close/ protective, i guess.

I post & lurk at ILX also...I'm guessing that 10 years ago Be.OK and I would have had about an 80% share of favorite bands (random drunk statement)...I've never understood the attraction to NHM though....Lots of folks love 'em here but I've been bored to tears whenever I've listened to them.

Billy, do you dig on any of the other E6 bands (Olivia Tremor Control, Apples in Stereo)?; just curious.

Not liking NMH is completely understandable.

I used to own a lot of E6 but traded most of it in. I never could get into Apples in Stereo or OTC but I still own and somewhat like a bunch of stuff by Beulah and the Minders although truthfully if someone stole all those and I noticed the gaps in my racks I'd probably be relieved when I discovered it wasn't something else missing.

I've always considered NMH a bit outside the whole E6 collective though as they aren't really catchy pop. If there's one group that I SHOULD like of the E6 based on generic descriptions of them its NMH but I tried for years to get into them and was just really bored by them. I've always struggled with the idea that people who I've otherwise really respected their taste could list NMH as a top 20 band and I've just never got them. I've liked a lot of bands that were both their influences or bands that were influenced by them, but just never could be anything but bored by them. Oh well.

I'd certainly agree that they are the the biggest name and one of the founding members but their sound isn't the typical straightforward pop sound of the e6, that's what I meant by my statement.

I can see where you're coming from, but in truth there's two E6 contingents. The West (Apples, Minders, Dressy Bessy, Beulah, Marbles, HWM, etc etc) is pop/rock. Very high energy driving rock music. The East (NMH, OTC, Instruments, Thimble Circus, Elf Power, Circulatory System, etc.) is way more experimental, drony, kitchen-sink type music. They have a slightly skewed pop take. Actually, NMH is not even nearly as weird as a lot of the E6 East bands and other spinoffs (Pipes You See, Music Tapes, Chocolate USA, etc.). NMH is really the center of all that.

I guess I'm most familiar with the west segment of the e6 although I do own some elf power which I wouldn't consider out of place amoungst the west contingent and could have sworn I owned more that were Atlanta based that fit in with west sound...names escaping me...

Not challenging your knowlege at all aerodynamics, as I am sure you know more about the e6 than I, I've never been that drawn by any of the bands I've heard.

oh definitely billy, it's not hard and fast. I agree with you on Elf Power in large part, and Of Montreal is a huge example of an East band that sounds West...there's certainly overlap--I was just speaking generally.

i met Jeff at a Circulitory System show, at the time i had no idea that people adored him. (there were about 10 people at the show, and i only went because i stumbled passed the bar drunk, and thought "ooh, there might be cute indie girls at this show)

i told him, "i used to really hate your album, but i like it now" and then i gave him some stickers.

Circulitory Sytem were really good. One of the tightest indie bands i've ever seen.

I saw them at a record store in Chicago (Reckless, on Broadway). Didn't get to speak to Jeff, but the trumpet player was very cool and nice. And Jeff DID take my request for "Song Against Sex", despite the fact that they didn't have a trombone. (They faked their way through it with a flugelhorn.)

Amazing band.
Wish they were still making music.
