Yail, I don't totally disagree. But it wasn't too long ago that Ken Griffey Jr. was considered the best. Then Bonds goes ape shit and hits 70 hmrs, and all of sudden he's always was the best. I generally think Bonds was the best player, but I think steroids and his inflated homerun is somewhat a factor.

nah, i think Bonds was in the pantheon before the big HR numbers. He already had some mmonster seasons and some leaugue MVP's.

Yail, don't get me wrong I agree. I still think the ridiculous homerun total is part of it too. I think he was the best, but it hard to distinguish Barry Bonds greatness and his homerun totals.

Shmoo, talent is talent, no doubt. Alex Sanchez can roid his ass off till tomorrow and it won't mean much. But Bret Boone is a great example of a decent ball player becoming an above average because of some extra pop. I don't think anybody is stupid enough to think steroids can take somebody like me and turn them into Barry Bonds.

are you still contending that steroids doesn't effect the homerun totals of the last decade?

Did I say that, or did I say that I didn't know? In either case, what has changed that would make me reconsider? Jose Canseco wrote a book?

I don't think it affects it that much (check out Marvin Benard and Alex Sanchez). How much farther does it allow you to hit the ball. Three feet? You still have to hit it, does it help you do that?

I'm not going to argue that Bonds isn't the best baseball player of his era.

However, there are a ton of factors that allow a great hitter to be successful. Bat speed, hand eye coordination, great eyesite period AND STRENGTH. Those extra 3 feet you talk about is what turns a long fly out into a homerun. It is strength which allows a hitter to fight off a nasty pitch to GET THE CHANCE to slam the next pitch out of the ballpark.

Steroids are not going to turn a scrub into an MVP but I don't underestimate the advantage that it gives a player who has a ton of talent to begin with.
