can someone describe why one would do this? is it just to rate the music you listen to? or is it to search other peoples interests?

The good thing about them hanging in the bathroom is that she won't be wearing them, right? Kind of like when they fall to the floor next to the bed, good things happen.

It just tracks what you have been listening to, so if I listen to a bunch of stuff you like, you can see what else I have ben listening to, so that you might try that out thinking you will like that too.

i use audioscrobbler for my lastfm.com page and have 2000+ tracks played, sucks that it doesnt recognize this on the audioscrobbler site
