My grandfather was an airforce pilot. He joined up in 1939 and got home in 1947. He served in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and South East Asia.

He often used to say that he "didn't see any American planes during the Battle of Britain". He also used to complain that later in the war Americans did a tour of duty and then went home. He was at war for the whole 6 years.
