Area codes that have similar numbers are geographically separate by design.

For instance, 212 is New York and 213 is Los Angeles. That way they are less confusable.

I knew a Chicago area code back when I was a Jesus Rock kid in the 70's cuz Resurrection Band had a song called "Area 312."

Still have Glenn and Wendi Kaiser's autographs somewhere, I think.
