I really enjoyed 'The African Safari Papers' by Robert Sedlack and pretty much anything from Stewart O'Nan. I say "pretty much" because I've only read 3 of his books so far...

i just finished "still life with woodpecker" by TR, and that was excellent. i'd also recommend some neruda poetry...always hits hard.

i don't like Tom Robbins either. i will now recomment one of Douglas Coupland's earlier book for the 1,846th time on this board. Quick, thinky, fun reads with enough quirks to reread later.

up to and including All Families are Psychotic are all worth reading definitely. Hey Nostradamus! and Eleanor Rigby could use some work. Girlfriend in a Coma and Miss Wyoming are probably my favorites. I'm sure i'm forgetting others.
