Now where is the love for this band? Their first two albums are so chock full of stellar songs that they are like 'best of' comps. And as good as those albums are, their Peel Sessions album is perhaps even better. How many other fans?

I like what I've heard, but I own nothing outright.

:raises hand:

Yup, I've only got Special View which is kind of a comp, but it's good stuff.

They were easily one of my fave bands of the early '80s. And as much as I like those first two discs, I think their third album Baby's Got A Gun is vastly underrated. "My Way Out Of Here" and "Why Don't You Kill Yourself" are great songs.

I love "Why Don't You Kill Yourself", and I've been known to sing parts at work.

Ain't that the truth. "Deadly Nightshade" and "Me And My Shadow" are splendid. And Ducky's correct, their Peel Sessions is superior--the PS version of The Beast is spine-tingling.

I really need to get this. I think I have most of their other stuff, including Remains. Great band.

This is one of those bands I've heard a little of, but never dug deep into...has any of this stuff been reissued on CD?

Special View should be easily found for cheap, it was originally released as a budget-line cd.

I bought Special View about 15 years ago based on "Another Girl, Another Planet" which was on one of those DIY comps. Sadly, that was the only song I really thought was very special and I ended up trading it in.

Was listening to my mp3 player on random the other day and "Lovers of Today" which I have from another comp came on. Made me wonder whether my decision was premature.

same thing happened to me. the Replacements' version is better than theirs, too, so i had even less of a reason to keep it.

IMO, the Only Ones definitely benefit from many repeat listens. You've kinda gotta sink into Peter Perrett's singular universe and accept it for what it is - which is neither punk nor "classic" rock, but rather some odd tangent nobody else has ever travelled.

I only know the obvious 'Another Girl, Another Planet'.

But honestly, what a song. It kinda puts me off exploring them more, I don't wanna be disappointed when nothing lives up to it. Stupid, but true.

As are "The Happy Pilgrim", "The Big Sleep" and "Oh Lucinda" (though I think the album version is a little dull compared to the PS one)
