Just listened to Skylarking yesterday. What great, smart, fun pop music. And Rundgren did a great job producing too. Maybe a bit too English for some, but c'mon, they've been remarkedly consistent since '79.

Have you tried these songs?:
•My Bird Performs (from Nonesuch)
•25 O'Clock (from 25 O'Clock EP)
•Vanishing Girl (from Psionic Sunspot)
•Grass (from Skylarking)
•Yacht Dance (from English Settlement)

All are Colin's songs (except "Yacht Dance" and I'm not sure about "25 o'clock"). And, as much as has been made about Andy Partridge (who IS brilliant), Colin Moulding is sorely overlooked.

Yeah Colin, Colins DO rule!

I love XTC, but I like that Dukes of Stratosphear album more than any single XTC album.

XTC is one of my top 10 favourite bands and because of their name I own cds by an artist that starts with X. I wonder if they will ever make another album?

They have been a fave of mine ever since I heard Black Sea in 82'.
People should check out their Bio Chalkhills and Children. Rungren really pissed off Andy Partridge while they made the Skylarking record.

Did Martin come in yet?
Gardening in July?
You know that he worked with Andy on the Greatest Living Englishman album, I assume?

Hi Todd
nah, he's a slacker, I wrote to him he said he was coming
and he just didn't turn up. No reply to further mails so I have
just got on with stuff { Coldplay interview in the bag too! }
I know his work with Andy but cough, didn't really enjoy it
to be honest, so hey, maybe our paths were not meant to cross.
I dunno, what does a Gardener have to do?
My July update is here for those interested plus a fresh Chart too:

Nope. I am not a fan of punk music.

i usually dislike these threads because then i get one or two songs stuck in my head for the rest of the day, but i've now been humming "life begins at the hop" for about an hour with no signs of slowing down.

Okay, I'll give you X-Ray Spex. But X are not your typical sounding punk band. If you're never given a listen they are at least worth a shot.

Well in that case, I will check them out. Can never have too many X artists in a collection. And I do mean that sincerely.

One of my favorite basslines of all time is the one in "Mayor of Simpleton." God, I get lost in that bassline.

I think you have just about the most dissimilar taste to me of anyone on the board i've seen so far. You constantly list Rush/King Crimson etc in your NPs (i can tolerate Crimson i guess). Just an observation is all.

If he's anything like me (also being a rabid Rush/Crimson fan,) I have had to slowly work my way into some genres, especially ones that are so far removed from the exacting instrumental prowess of the genre that I spent most of my high school and college years addicted to. You know, punk's kinda messy. I still can't say I'm much of a punk fan, either, but some of the stuff I listen to approaches it. Fugazi's probably as close to real punk as I get, and a part of that is because I think those guys are fantastic musicians (check 'em out Flowthgin, you might just like them a LOT, like I do.) I did, however, just pick up a used copy of The Nation Of Ulysses' 13 Point Program to Destroy America, but I'm not entirely enthralled with that yet.

For me there is no disconnect between D&W and everything up to and including Wasp Star. It's all a long and deliciously cool drink from the same fountain. With the exception of "The Big Express", which unlike the gentle chug through the countryside of previous material was an iron opera, steam powered and brick encased. (Andy's words)

(scratching head) I don't understand how you could have such contrasting opinions about a body of work with such continuity. What is it that you either love or hate?
