I’m using a 10 point rating system with 10 being the best of course.

--------------------------------------------------------------

SUFJAN STEVENS - Flint (For the Unemployed and Underpaid)
A nice beginning to the mix as it sets the tone. The song itself does little to make me want to buy any of his albums. It didn’t really grab me.
RATING: 5.0

THE POSTAL SERVICE – Sleeping In
Not one of the better songs on the Postal Service album, but nonetheless, a very good one. A good indication on how great that album is.
One of only a few electronic songs on the mix. Shame Shame!
RATING: 7.0

SOLOMON BURKE – Fast Train
I can’t stand the blues. Although talented, Solomon Burke is not my cup of tea.
It’s not necessarily the worst song on the mix, it’s just the one that piqued my interest the least.
RATING: 3.5

SPIRITUALIZED – Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space
Sounds a little like the Soundtrack Of Our Lives. This song has a way of relaxing me and that’s good. It’s nice and mellow.
RATING: 6.5

THE VEILS – The Tide That Left And Never Came Back
This song feels out of place on the Veils album, and it feels out of place on this mix. I never really understood the love for it.
There are so many other better songs on that album to choose from.
RATING: 5.0

AIR – La Femme D’Argent
Now this is what I’m talking about. A song with some substance, even though it’s an instrumental. Nevertheless, it’s right up my alley. I must buy every Air album now.
Probably my favorite song on the mix.
RATING: 9.0

ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO – Last To Know
Thanks to the Air song, and now this, I’m beginning to feel cultured again. I really like this song. I’m definitely going to check this guy out.
One of my favorites on the mix.
RATING: 8.0

BECK – Lost Cause
Beck is one of those artists that impresses me every time I listen to one of his songs but still have yet to buy any of his albums. I must remedy this.
One of my favorites on the mix. Three great songs in a row. Thanks Dave.
RATING: 8.0

BOBBY BARE JR. – Your Favorite Hat
Uh Oh, and just like that…
Nothing spectacular about this song. It’s very ordinary, and rather bland following Air, Alejandro Escovedo, and Beck.
RATING: 6.0

BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE – Anthem For A Seventeen Year Old Girl
OK, we’re back. Similar to Spiritualized, this song puts me in a good mood. It always seems to put a smile on my face. That must mean I was a 17-year old girl in a past life…
Also, one of my favorites on the mix.
RATING: 8.0

DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS – Goddamn Lonely Love
When I first realized there was a song by the Drive-By Truckers on this mix, I was thrilled. It was short-lived. Instead of DBT, I got Don Henley.
One of the worst songs on this mix and definite momentum killer.
RATING: 3.0

JESSE MALIN – Riding On The Subway
This is probably the catchiest song of the bunch. It’s pop with some twang, similar to Rhett Miller, and even Ryan Adams I guess.
A nice surprise on a mix full of slow moments.
RATING: 7.0

KATHLEEN EDWARDS – One More Song The Radio Won’t Like
I really dig this woman’s voice. Very soothing and unsettling at the same time. And the song is a perfect addition to this mix. Very nice.
RATING: 7.0

MERCURY REV – Caroline Says Part II
These guys have always been an acquired taste for me, and this song is shockingly too bland for me. Perhaps, if it were placed earlier in the mix, it’d stand out more.
RATING: 5.0

THE WALKMEN – New Year’s Eve
I’ve always thought this song was the sleeper hit of the Walkmen album. It’s subtle yet stays with you for a long time.
A great ending to the mix. Every mix should end this way.
RATING: 8.0

There are really only two songs on this mix that I don’t like enough to skip and that tells you how good this mix is. It’s a very relaxing mix and it is best to listen to it while lying down or sunbathing or anything that you’d do lying on your back. Personally, I like to listen to it early in the morning when I get ready for work or school (when school is in session). It seems to set the tone for the rest of the day.
There are several songs that I find myself listening to over and over. The songs by Air, Broken Social Scene, and Beck being my three favorites.

Thanks Dave, for a really good mix. I must admit, it has helped me through some rough times this past semester.

OVERALL RATING: 6.4*
*I added the ratings and divided them by the total amount of songs.

FAVORITE SONG: AIR – La Femme D’Argent
LEAST FAVORITE SONG – SOLOMON BURKE – Fast Train

Sweet dude, Thanks. This mix was made for chilling/recovery mongering, etc...

Give that BBJ song a few listens. It is simple, but I find myself humming the 'Baa, bababa' part all day.

Glad it sufficed.

FYI: I will be posting a review on Rick Derris' mix next. I can't promise when but I'm hoping it'll be some time within the next week.

I just feel it's a nice way of thanking people for their time and effort of making these mixes. That is all.

Man, I love that song. I think it's the whole reason I decided I liked Sufjan Stevens.

I really like it, but it is head and shoulders above everything else I have heard from him.

Also, this mix should have had The Concretes' "Say Something New" and The Delays' "Long Time Coming" but iTunes only allows youso many burns or whatever, or maybe my cpu got deauthorized, but anyway, would make the mix stronger IMO.

It's a good mix as is. I find that more relaxing mixes with a lot of slower songs do better when there are no more than 15 songs. Any more and the mix tends to drag. I was never really bored listening to your mix. In fact, I'm gonna buy my first Air album tonight after work. :)

cool, I appreciate it. I can't believe you called that Truckers song "Don Henley," ;)

I will tell you that IMO that AIR song is the best on the album, mostly because it's sans lyrics. That was a great album to chill to in the later college years...

LOL...that is so funny. I was actually listening to the mix and a friend of mine was over at my place and when the song came on, I turned to him (yes, it was a him!) and said, "the more I listen to this, the more it sounds like Don Henley." ;)

Have you heard the Concretes' cover of the Stones' "Miss You?" It is actually really good. I'll send it to you if you don't have it.

And OPA- you MUST get "Moon Safari" by Air. That's THE Air album.

I
I

Homegirl speaks the truth.
And it's weird that the two cities I've spent most of my life in have both had songs written about them; Flint by Sufjan Stevens and Saginaw by Lefty Frizzell
NYC, yeah sure, there's a lot of lyrical inspiration there. But Saginaw!? Weird.

Equally fine mix and review, gentlemen.

I believe it's true. When you dload a song from Itunes it gets encoded somehow to block it from being copied and burned a limited # of times.

You'll always have it in your Itunes but at some point you won't be able to include it on cd mixes. Kinda shitty.

Also, when assholes like your dad authorize your music for his, and every fucking person in his family's computer, and then you get a new one, voila, you are authorized on 5...and your new one = 6....you're fucked.

They all still play on my ipod tho.

Have you tried using something like this over the files? It's the only way I can get MusicMagic to analyze my iTunes downloads.
