Yup... That is right. I'll be in Philadelphia July 12th through the 18th for a conference. I know nothing about the city of brotherly love. If any of you obnerites do, please let me know where I should go, and what I should do. I'd appreciate it muchly.

just about anything really.

I'm going to a Phillies game one night, but the rest seem pretty open. I'll be with a bunch of fun, and serious drinkers - all of them high school history teachers (actually a fun bunch when they are not pushing you to learn about the War of Jenkin's Ear or what not) and in the past we've found comfortable bars with cheap drinks, a good jukebox and drank ourselves so drunk that the conference every morning seem like a blur ( which is good 'cuz they are run like Amish funerals).

ok...
Places to Eat
-during the day, there's no reason (other than free lunches already provided) not to eat every meal possible at Reading Terminal Market, which is the greatest place to eat on earth. Seriously, everything you could possibly be hungry for is available here, and reasonably priced at that. Also, one of the few remaining places in the city where you can shout at amish folk to "get a zipper".
-The Standard Tap is a pretty good place to eat, with great beer selections, but it gets crowded as hell sometimes.
-There's good pizza places all over the place, and it really isn't hard to find a good cheese steak if you're so inclined.
-If you get hungry at the phillies game I'd check out the Planet Hoagie stand, which seriously makes some of the best sandwiches ever (fabrizio w/lettuce & tomato slays).
Bars
-Philly is a world class old man bar town. For something with a better juke and more interesting clientele, you might wanna check out:
-Skinner's Dry Goods, which is in Olde City (hint: don't drive) area, and pretty much the only bar on that part of Market that doesn't suck. It's cheap and funny.
-Sugar Mom's is another cool bar n Olde City, but it gets kinda too dark and crowded for me at times.
-the Khyber might have some band playing there so it gets super crowded, but upstairs is usually pretty cool, and the DJs there usually know their shit.
-If you wanna go for something a little more hipsterrific, head over the Ministry of Information, which is a nice cheap place with a great jukebox, but smokey as hell.
-right around the corner from there is the 700 Club, which is a bit more sophisticated.
-If you want something a bit...i dunno, kitschier, i'd check out Tattooed Mom, which is a bike messenger bar on South Street, which means it's awesome for people watching. It's kinda what I don't like about Punk rock bars at the same time, whatever that means.
Random crap:
I try not to let anyone through town without seeing the Mutter Museum, which is the coolest and creepiest place on earth. It's really something that everyone should see, though.
Not sure how much time you're gonna have to bounce around town, but there's a shitload of other stuff that's worth checking out but I doun't wanna spend another lunch break linking all this shit unless I know you actually would be interested in seeing that sorta crap.

wow. so that should tide you over for a bit. I can't believe that there are websites for some of these places. It should also be stated that I don't really booze in philly as much as I used to, what with a commute and most of my friends moving west, so some of the other philly guys will surely be better to ask about a lot of this. I'm sure someone can shoot down about half of these as well.

No pretty links here, but:

The Standard Tap (mentioned above) also has a great jukebox, and I highly recommend a trip up there. It does get crowded though.

About a block or so (maybe two) away from the Tap is N. 3rd, which has really good food.

The Royal Tavern (on passyunk, between 6th & 7th) is another good bar to check out.

You all rock. Seriously - Like Geothermal shit here folks.

My days are a mite busy, but my nights are free. And Most of the folks with me are up to no good as well, so we will most likely troll bars.

If there are any interesting shows local (prefered) or national coming to town from the 12th to the 17th lemme know. I'm up for a night of concert-going for sure. 'specially in foreign territory. I've got an obner just thinking about it.

Broken Social Scene and Dinosaur Jr. is sold out, I think.

Femi Kuti at the TLA

I'd recommend seeing Buried Beds (tomcmj's Band) at the Tin Angel on the 16th.

you've gone and warmed the cockles of my cold black heart.

i said cockles.

i second all the recommendations above. especially the mutter museum. something about that wall full of catalogued skulls ("Gianni Medici, 16, Imbecile, Stabbed after dispute with apothecary") gets me every time.

and should you find yourself at that show say hello, i will be the one in black playing the black bass with the black outlook.

Pfft. Drug crime. Even five hundred years ago.

They're destroying our community.
