The Metro in Chicago just emailed me to remind me he's here on Saturday. I know nothing of this guy's music. Is this upbeat and fun? I read the little bio and it sounds like a good time. Anyone care to enlighten me??

It is a great time. Afro-beat with some hip-hop influence. If you like dancing, your ass will shake the entire set. People from the audience come on stage and get freaky with the band. Awesome.

amazing show. 15+ piece with backup singers, synchronized dance moves, etc. they played for 3 hours. 3 FUCKING HOURS! one of his sons was playing sax and the kid could blow! couldn't have been more than 13 years old. the sound was nice and loud too with the horns and drums way up front. the show flew by, femi is a total showman and knows how to work a crowd - he's extremely charismatic. i'll be catching him again next time he comes through town.

Heh heh. True dat. I guess I wasn't too surprized to see a fellow Obnerite at such a good show.

Whoa. What a great show. Man, am I ever wiped from all the rump-shaking.

Was it just me or is he starting to add in some more flipped-out jazz sounds to his music? There were times when I was feeling a bit of a Sun Ra vibe--very excellent.

As an aside, I'd like to state here for the record that people at shows (12XU & friends excluded, of course) drive me absolutely CRAZY. There was this whole gang of baby boomers near me, dressed as if they were on a trip to Africa, and rolling joints on the spot all night as if to say: "Look kids--we're rebelious & cool".

Between the group of them they managed to:
- elbow me in the chest
- spill beer across my whole right arm
- nearly knock me over / punch me in the head with whirling dervish style dancing.

And then after all that some other random dude spilt beer on my other arm and all he had to say about it was "It's just beer--it's not going to kill you." No apology or anything. Whoa. such silliness.

There was a group of those type when I saw Femi in Boulder, CO back in '01. They were pretty outrageous as well. I just thought to myself "Boulder... heh." e-stone gets that.

Glad you had fun, kids.

this is like the people who wear soccer jerseys to shows by european bands to, uh, show off that they know what sport the musicians probably enjoy.

yeah - i was feeling this too. there were moments where the band would just go into these short freakouts - like 10-20 seconds in length and quickly fall right back into the groove. the drummer was a fucking animal.

i was kind of expecting a half sucky crowd at this show. there were A LOT of hippies.
