for the most part this was pretty well done, shedding light on a lot of stuff the other docs miss (the dictators, bad brains, agnostic front, the screamers, etc...) but they actually go from bad brains to nirvana, and state that punk pretty much died in the early/mid-80s until '92. what the fuck is that all about?

i taped it, for a viewing sunday afternoon.

I guess it depends on how they define punk, but, yeh, early-to-mid 80s bands like the Hard-Ons, Bad Brains, and the Magnolias would've been interested to hear that punk was dead.

yeah, they totally left out all of the straight edge movement ['cept the 15 second clip of Ray Capo], and didn't mention anything about D.R.I. and the numerous punk/harddcore/crossover genre bands. that all took place between the mid 80s and '92.

henry rollins came off like a hypocrite. he compalains about how close minded many of the people in the punk scene were, but then goes on to make fun of and slightly discredit Agnostic Front. i think he was just bitter because bands like AF took the limelight away from artists like Black Flag, who in their later days were writing fucking horrendous music anyways.

overall pretty interesting though, especially the footage of Bad Brains and Fugazi.

i thought the doc was great and just stumbled upon in flipping around last night. they didn't so much say punk died--i mean they had an extended (and positive) section on bad brains--but, more than that they said that it changed into hardcore which wasn't exactly the same as the punk thing going on in new york and london in the late 60's. who, by the way weren't described via their music as much as their message (i know, that sounds hokey)

i thought rollins made in interesting statement about hardcore rising when all the original "tear it all down" punks from the late 60's had moved on and all that were left were the folks that really wanted to be there. such began the "violent" side like moshers et al.

I'm happy to hear this... I've had this doc saved on TiVo for over a week now but haven't had the chance to view since the in-laws have been out here. My husband is a HUGE Bad Brains fan, so I'm sure he'll be psyched to see this.

I only caught the last 20-30 minutes of it though I had it playing in the background while someone was nattering away to me on the telephone so I only heard bits of the earlier segments.

Am I wrong, did they completely leave out Los Angeles punk? I heard them talking about CBGBs [edit, meaning New York] but I was a bit shocked not to see mention of X [edit, and L.A.]. Did they talk about X?

I can't even take Henry Rollins seriously anymore since he started doing those crappy "remember when" type shows on VH1. And he's doing some film critic thing as well and from what I've seen it isn't a very innovative program--just a run of a mill type film critique show (ala Siskel and Ebert).

yeah, rollins did a live stand-up album too. remember that? they had a piece of it on the CMJ sampler a few years ago. something about how "el nino" was an inappropriate name and some joke about how it fucks shit up so it should be called some less diminutive. strange.

No, they did not talk about X at all. In fact, they *may* have mentioned Suicidal Tendancies, Circle Jerks, et. al. in passing, but none of the bands were featured. Unless you want to count Keith Morris dropping his .02 on the whole scene. Yeah, they casually dismissed Black Flag prior to Henry, and kinda glossed over that whole transition. I'm actually bummed they didn't mention Bad Religion either, who continue to be a great punk band to this day.

I used to like Henry, but I think Henry likes to hear himself talk way too much. Yeah, "Henry's Film Corner" is sometimes good. I really hate the banter he has with his co-host, Heidi. Irritating beyond belief.
