I just bought a 42" Panasonic plasma display. Love it. I did a bit of research beforehand and found that the pros/cons of LCD vs. plasma pretty much even out. I'm very satisfied with the model I have. Picture is wonderful. It's a pretty low-end model. I don't know how much you're wanting to spend, and you can spend a lot. Mine was around $1800. An Argentinian traveller like you should be able to handle at least that.

You could buy a sweet drumset, complete with hardware and cymbals for that much.

well i'll pay what it takes to get the right one. there's just so many choices and the differentiation can often be pretty subtle.

Gettin' me floor pans, trunk floor, fuel tank/sender, tail panel for that $1800. Then it's the stroker crate and new 5 speed...won't be watching HDTV for a while.

I'd get a plasma if you can afford it. LCD just doesn't look at nice, imo.

Plasma gets dimmer sooner, and costs more, but looks a shit-ton better than lcd. Best to have a plasma for movies / events, and a shitty tv for news / real world.

Until they fix the response-time with LCD, I'd say go CRT. Unless you're hurting for space.

my old man bought a huge-ass plasma for his birthday. He knew the nation-wide dealer dude so he got it at wholesale. Which was like half-price. Ours has just as long a life as an old-school tv so it's not gonna pixellate or any of that shit. In short, sport ain't sport unless it's on 'the big screen'.

I thought that lcd was brighter, though. And while it may go dimmer sooner, i just don't see me not swapping this thing for something flatter within ten years so i really don't view that as a concern.

I just got a Sony 55XS955 which is a rear projection LCD display and I am overwhelmed by how cool it is. Unless you have your heart set on a wall mounted display you would do well to include a RPTV if you're into "bang for the buck". At an average of 19 inches deep they do save considerable space over CRTs and you get a bigger screen vs plasma for less money. Many are equally as happy with their DLPs but I see rainbows on most of those sets, plus they give me headaches almost immediately but I'm in the minority. The fact is that all of the technology being used has drawbacks, which given the price of the sets and the amount of actual HD broadcasts is almost criminal. When you get serious, the AVS forums have so much information available that it will make your head spin. It's a great resource.

I have a Toshiba 42' HDTV/DLP, and I'm extremely happy with it. I've never seen rainbows, and the picture quality is outstanding. One of the best things about it is that it's all screen....there's only half an inch black border around the screen, and the speakers aren't on the sides. All picture.

Oh I'm with you, I don't want anything else, as of yet (easy to say when you have no money anyway). And the early reports about the dimming were exaggerated, too. It takes like 10,000 hours to notice (which means it will dim like 15 or 20% by then), which is quite similar to current CRT's. Cough up the 2 large and go for it. If this house sells for the right amount, I sure as shit will.

the man gets a lot of use out of his television, haq. i mean, anyone who has watched you got served that many times should earn one of these on principle. it should be like a powerup in a video game.

fifteenth viewing of Honey=jumbotron.

that said, i think if i spent $1800 on a tv i'd need a pryin' stick to get out of bed within a year. i would move my bed in front of the tv.

and can burn in the picture if you overuse the cable radio & burns more energy.

But my parents went with a 42 inch plasma anyways & I freakin love it. I can't stop watching movies. But you can get a 42 (which is BIG) LCD for pretty cheap & it's still a great TV.

You could hang it over your bed, like in that philips commercial about how much better our lives are now.

So does 42" mean it is 42 inches Across, or diagonally?

diagonally. This is the standard for tv measurements.
