He's been around a long time. Allmusic's similar artists makes him seem possibly appealing to me.

* Robbie Robertson
* Eric Clapton
* Dire Straits
* Peter Gabriel
* Leonard Cohen
* James McMurtry

Should I just stay away or look into some of his work?

I'd stay well clear. He had a lot of hits here during the eighties most of which were horrible.

Think 'Money For Nothing' era Dire Straits.

A friend of mine was really into him in college. This friend was also really into Basia and Level 42. Choose wisely.

You know the old joke right?

Dire Straits and Chris Rea are joing up. They're going to be called Dire Rea!

It was funny 20 years ago, trust me.

Most of those artists don't belong on the list. Take off Robbie Robertson, Leonard Cohen, Eric Clapton, and Peter Gabriel and it's sort of getting close. As I recall, his early albums were swing-and-a-miss singer/songwriter fare, then he had a "comeback" of sorts with an album called Road To Hell, which (as Konstantinl mentioned) was a photocopy of Dire Straits (even his voice had changed to better ape Mark Knopfler). Since then, he's ridden that schtick into the ground. I imagine there are people out there who put him on par with Dylan, but they probably eat chalk as well.

I love his song "Texas," which used to get some radio airplay in Austin back in the day, because it's in Texas and all. Good tune.

I actually really like him. His voice definitely reminds me of Leonard Cohen. Sure, some of his music is a little dated, but have you heard Leonard Cohen's albums from the same time period? They sound a little dated, too.

I would recommend Auberge, The Road to Hell or (import) God's Great Banana Skin.

you know, I didn't mind the few songs I heard from The Road To Hell.

Are you telling me to eat me? I don't know if I should take that as autocannibalism, or autofellation, but either way...no, thank you.

Nice setup. I almost missed it.
